I have a friend... ahem...

she he  Er They committed a driving related offence some weeks ago. Not a speeding camera. What time do the police have to contact you and press charges/issue summons in?

I've googled but can only find info relating to speeding tickets, but these seem to say the police have to lay info before the courts before 6 months have lapsed, although it is up to the court how long they then take.

If this seems a little vague, blame it on my age/hair colour.

They must contact you within 14 days by letter (date of their letter not date recieved)

They must proceed wihin 6 months (never get excited, i once got a summons 5 months and 29 days)

Depends on the offence. If you ran over the Queen I'm guessing they can have as much time as they like.

Depends on the offence. Most offences tried on a summary basis require than a notice of intended prosecution be served within 14 days unless there was an accident, you were stopped at the time by the police or if your details could not, with reasonable diligence, be obtained in time.

The NIP requirement only applies to the registered keeper, which obviously may not be the driver.

In England and Wales information must be laid with the court within 6 months but may be deliverd soon after. In Scotland you must be cited within 6 months.

sorry - i might be incorrect - thought it was speeding!

but no worries as I saw the queen on tv yesterday and she seemed fine so you should be ok!

Pepipoo forums are a good place. The road traffic offenders act sections 1 & 2 are where the info above is from.

It does if you are driving at the time.

Don't return/sign ANYTHING until you have read pepipoo or spoken to Geoffrey Millar.

FWIW I handled mine on my own with info from pepipoo until the Feds started with a bit of brinkmanship. When I went to the fines office I managed to start a small rebellion of, what was 18 people patiently somberly waiting to passively pay their fines. Caused absolute chaos and I was smiling like a cheshire cat as I walked out the building :-D

Hehe. When i went to court for my trial there were meant to be 5. The other 4 got away with it because i took up all the courts time. I won too Cheesy

Veering away from original post, I went to court some years ago charged with D&D. At the time I was only 17 so the police had to ring my parents when I was arrested, and when my mum arrived at the police station she told them I didn't drink, so she wanted a blood test to prove I was sober. After a lot of dicking about, it eventually went to court and I was found not guilty.

The magistrate said although I was clearly disorderly, she couldn't prove I was drunk and so I got off Cheesy
