Should we intervene, & face further reprisals & conflict, or leave them to it?

This ghastly stuff is being widely reported in the media today.

Photographs have shown men thrown from tall buildings in a growing trend for punishing homosexuals in Islamic State-controlled Syria and Iraq.

Being gay is punishable by death under Isis ideology, and Isis media has reported the apparent killings with increased frequency. These photographs show two barefoot, bound men pushed off a building by armed, hooded militants. One victim was blindfolded.

A tidy crowd comes along to watch......

In a separate incident, another gay person is flung to their death from a rooftop.

Obviously disgusting and outrageous.

But some may say that the West interfering in Iraq is a main reason for the surge in Islamic terrorism.

Steer clear IMO.

Saudi Arabia has an appalling civil rights record, with people sentenced to death for merely choosing a different faith. Half the population are subjected to laws that limit their human rights just because they're women. Victims of rape are lashed and imprisoned for being alone with a man, as they were obviously tempting him and a group of others to gang-rape her. Immigrant workers are seen as disposable, and you've got to be extremely brave to speak out about this if you live there.

But of course, western governments don't speak out about it either. Not when Saudi money is being spent on billions of pounds of military equipment every year, and of course, they've got oil. In essence, they're not a million miles away from ISIS - yet their money legitimises the persecution of many who live there.

Of course, the US hardly has the best record in terms of civil liberties (look at how many people are incarcerated in their penal system), but even though gay people are still campaigning for equal rights they aren't being thrown off balconies for their sexuality.

There are also plenty of Commonwealth countries that have the death penalty for homosexuality. Laws based on age-old prejudices, enshrined in religion. But we're happy to continue to do business with them and use them as part of the global financial system.
