I have been keeping tourney stat's for the past 7 months and doing OK ... 5 of the 7 ahead .. and nicely ahead overall. A month ago I decided to play more cash try and ge some consistency of earning. I found i was doing OK at cash coming out ahead over 70% of the time and a decent, if not spectacualar profit. Trouble is my tourney game has gone to pot. I don't feel I'm playing any different ... keep it reasonabely tight and generally go pretty deep ... but have only finished in the money in 1 out of 35+ events. Is this normal when switching from tourney to cash? It's driving me nuts and I'm not sure what I'm doing different ... I certainly don't feel I'm playing the two games the same way

It's just variance Rug. Tourney poker is like that.

if you've got a formular for winning online stts just stick with it.

all you can do is stick with it, turn over the better hands and hope they hold up.

All your expeiriancing is the cycles in which you seem to recieve more bad beats and out draws and walk into more monsters than usual.

the more tourneys you can get in during a session the better chance of leveling it out.

RugRat,

its certainly possible that its variance having its wicked way, but people overuse variance as an excuse (I think reason is a better word)  for the times they lose.

What I mean by that, is that you mention that you have been playing a lot of ring games lately. As a result of this, is definately possible that your style has changed so that it is more suitable to deepstack poker then it is to the shallow stack tournament structure (ie calling raises with marginal hands on implied odds basis, it still mite be correct in tournies, but its easy to fall into the trap of doing this when it isn't) It wont "feel different" because your mentality has become accustomed (possibly) to the new style

what I would suggest is not to merely write it off as variance.. rather if you have access to the information, go through some of your tourney hand histories from the last 7 months or so, and then go through the more recent ones, and then you will be able to see clearly whether or not it is indeed variance, or whether your natural game has de-lineated over to a cash game based style, rather then the old tourney style you have had in the past

I'd like to think it's variance but not sure .. it is too coincidental. I hear what's being said ... I'm gonna put cash on hold for a while and try STT to satisfy my need for "instant gratification" ... perhaps being away from cash for a while will allow me to play my more normal MTT game which has definately gone off. Thanks all for taking time to respond.
