Its an Old Chestnut
The BBC:
Positives:
Gary Lineker...smooth, professional, sardonic, knowledgeable. Leicester boy
Martin O'Neill: Brilliant, slightly spoilt by taking four minutes to answer every question
Alan Hansen: Top pundit
Motty: Not everyone's cup of tea, but an icon
Jonathan Pearce: Improved tons as a commentator, now does a nice line in irony.
Barry Davies "Oh I say"..still a great commentator
Radio5Live: all of it, fantastic radio station
Negatives:
Alan Shearer: Sends me to sleep, but knows his stuff
Mark Lawrenson: like chalk on a blackboard
Garth Crooks: So earnest and serious it makes me want to get him very drunk and let him loose in a Lion enclosure
Graeme Le Saux: Not a fan
Ray Stubbs: Horrendous
Hazel Irvine: makes me want to scream whatever she is presenting, so wholesome I want to throw her off a cliff
ITV
Positives:
Gabby Logan: Yes indeed
Ruud Gullit: Top pundit
Terry Venables: Seen it done it, slightly spoilt by gratuitous cheeky chappy cockney moments
Peter Drury: Excellent underrated commentator trained on 5 live
Negatives
AllyMcCoist: stick to light entertainment, gruesome punditry
Andy Townsend: How does he still get onto panels for events like this. Hopeless
Clive Tyldesley: Not a patch on the BBC commentators
Jon Champion: second rate motty like commentator
Jim Beglin: Non descript colour man
Give me the BBC any day
Your opinions?

Its all just pictures for me - Radio Five all the way here (and if you have the pictures through digital and radio on its all perfect on the timing front these days).
But your summary looks spot on to me Mr Tight.
Why are Gareth Crooks and Townsend employed ? - hope for us all I guess.

Agreed Tighty Beeb for me. The boy Linekar has come along way since his early appearances. O'Neill is a top pundit, & not afraid to look at the game with a more philosophical slant.

I discovered yesterday that if you press the Red button whilst watching on BBC1, you have a choice of commentaries

Why do the BBC stick with Ian Wright?
Apart from offering enthusiasm when England are going well, he offers nothing at all. Should never have been allowed back after his petulant performance after N.Ireland beat England.
Are the BBC not allowed to bring in writers from newspapers as experts?
Henry Winter (Daily Telegraph) should be there alongside Hansen. They are the best two analysts IMO.
As for ITV.... They have adverts, so you dont get time for in depth analysis.

How could I forget the idiot that is Ian Wright?...jingoistic one dimensional court jester figure
complete waste of space on a panel.
and if I see Peter Reid this world cup on a panel I will NOT be responsible for my actions

At least neither channel has Jamie Redknapp >:?

I only ever watch ITV for the Grand Prix. I hate that channel. Although SKYONE is worse. I like BBC, it is better and also doesn't have adverts. My vote is for BBC. It's a shame Nemesis isn't here, he could have done a poll

I only posted it because Nemesis is away.
ITV GP coverage...immeasurably better with Steve Rider rather than that clown Jim Rosenthal though
and Brundle is THE best colour/expert commentator

Motson & Tyldesley should both be shot...twice...just to make sure
BBC pictures either with crowd noise or 5live commentary. Only probs with the 5live feed is the slight delay & Alan Green is murder.
My all time favourite English commentator was David Coleman. He actually commentated without overdoing the stats & opinions he was just straight to the point
"Kempes... 1 nil!" Brilliant

Yea, I agree about Steve Rider. He is better than Rosenthal. I remember Steve Rider used to introduce GP back when BBC used to show it before ITV got it in 97.
Nemesis was back in the UK yesterday. We may still get a poll

Steve Rider is much better that Jim 'boring' Rosenthal.
The golf on the BBC isn't the same without him presenting it.
He's come a long way since 'World of Sport'

I'm also a big fan of Steve Rider and its a shame he has left the BBC and left us with idiots like Motson and Lawrenson.
As for the world Cup well, BBC for me all the way sure I hate how everything turns to England even when they are not playing, it does my tits in but they have no breaks which I despise and they have humoour and wit on the pannel.
When does wee Strachan come on though?
