The Israeli Poker Association has announced that it received an official go-ahead from the police to hold the national poker championship for 2007.

As stated, the national poker championship was supposed to be held in January 2007 at the Exhibition Center in Tel Aviv. Shortly before the scheduled time of the tournament, however, Israel Police announced a ban on holding the tournament, basing its ban on the claim that poker was a game of luck.

In light of the police's surprising announcement, the Israeli Poker Association turned to lawyers Vered Cohen and Raanan Ben-Or, and asked them to take legal action in order to receive approval for holding the tournament. The lawyers turned to Professor Ehud Lehrer, who is Head of the Department of Statistics at the University of Tel Aviv, and asked him to give an opinion on the significance of the factor of luck in the game of poker.

Professor Lehrer researched the issue in an in-depth manner and eventually submitted an unequivocal opinion according to which "knowledge, understanding, and ability all have a decisive influence on the player's chance to advance and win during the tournament. Thus, the outcome of the tournament is unequivocally more dependent on knowledge, understanding and ability than luck."

Professor Lehrer added that in his opinion, "players in the tournament are required to set and change their game strategies throughout the entire game, while carrying out a mathematical, logistic, and psychological analysis of the progress and nature of the game in opposition to the other players around the table."

In light of Professor Lehrer unequivical findings, the Israeli Poker Association decided to again turn to the police with the research findings. The police and the District Attorney's Office decided to allow the tournament to go ahead in light of the new findings brought before them.

My Mum says poker is a game of skill.

Unforunately, I don't think Tessa Jowell gives a toss....

I do not know the ins and outs of Israeli law, however i believe the UK law on this matter found it to be a game of skill, but where luck plays a major role, which under UK law means it is a game of luck...no?

Bridge is hugely popular, and might be close to being their national sport....

I can understand how some people have a problem with it being a game of skill. All it takes one High Court judge on a case like the Gutshot to have sat down at a Friday night drunken £10 rebuy.

Almost, they have doors on three sides trying to bash their heads in and the sea on the other.

Brings a new meaning to the old term " horseshoes and hand grenades"!!!!!!!

Hope this does not effect retiring military people!!!!!!

They may drop all the grenades to start playing poker as a profession!

The Gazza strip could be decided over a deepstack heads up comp, with a swiss dealer obviously.
