So I was watching episode 21 of Heroes and the programme freezes, then "not responding" comes up at the top of the page. I can't do anything, ctrl alt del will not bring up task manager and nothing works.  I am forced to turn the laptop off. When I turn it back on it will not get past the Windows XP page.

Any ideas?

thanks

When "booting" up , press F8 to bring up a start page, then start in safe mode.

Close down and re start normally

Hopefully it will work.

Sounds like 1 of 2 possible problems:

1. Somehow you have lost 1 or some of the dll files required to load windows.
2. Corrupt hard drive, possibly a bad sector where the above mentioned files are stored and windows cant access them.
Do you have any recovery discs or a bootable copy of windows?

Thanks guys , it works now. Safe mode did get me in in the end and a restart seems to have fixed it. The windows seem a lot "boxier" and sharper but I am just happy to have it back working.

Thanks again

Check your display settings - the restart may have played around with them.
