I love greyhound racing and have done for many years now. When I first started going my Saturday nights used to regularly start with the early meeting at Stamford Bridge (5.45pm 1st race), followed by piling into taxis six at a time at the end of racing to White City where you could just catch the last three or four races for half price admission.
Anyhow I put all that experience to good use this year when a puppy that caught my eye in January or February in a televised race and I had a few quid on him @ 300/1 on Betfair.

Meenala Cruiser, currently quite well fancied at around 25/1 after doing the clock at Sunderland a week or so back.

Unfortunately it was literally a few quid as that was all that was available, but he is an improving  puppy and  I've certainly had my money's worth already. Good looking draw in round one too, I just wish these heats were televised.

I was big into Dogs when I lived in London, 6 nights a week. Hendon (sadly missed, it's Brent Cross Shoping Centre now!), Haringey, Hackney Wick on Saturday mornings, White City, Walthamstow, Wimbledon. I could never find a winner at the City, but Derby night was just awesome there, never been as good since. In later years it was Watford BAGS, & Slough, where I don't recall ever having a losing night. Thats a Sainsburys now I believe. Catford was ace too - I loved the sprints there, & The Guineas at The Wick was my fave annual event. Crayford used to have 8 dog races I think.

The Savvas & their "Westmeads" ruled the roost in those days. I seem to recall Nikki had an Open Race dog that won 29 straight Opens.

When I moved to to Derbyshire, I tried Derby & Colwick Dogs, but after the London scene, it was as dull as dishwater, & a very weak market, £100 moved any dog odds on, Owlerton seems to be the best place in these parts.

my local track was romford so 2/3 nights a week there.haringay friday nights (the best track around for dogs in them days with grass straights) saturday mornings were hackney where they done the meanest full english going prior to racing.wembley saturday nights.

when we eventually went into ownership our bitch ran at crayford and then later catford. being an open racer i see her run and win at wimbledon and the stow.

i was to young for white city unfortunatly and heard that derby nights there were a bit special.

so many tracks are now supermarkets such a shame

seriously though as good a start as it is you dont win the derby in the first round and the fastest animal doesnt necessarily always win it.

I quite forgot Romford, great little trck, & yes, Haringey with it's grass.

At Hackney on a Saturday morning, I never missed it in years, it was the best atmo at any dog track, the locals & punters were mostly dodgy villains & such like. Liz Frazer was alway there, she was a bit of a moll, & Ronnie Knight, who was later to marry Barbara Windsor, then done an 18 stretch I believe, after being extradited from Spain, I think he waa involved in the Brinks-Mat gold bullion heist at Heathrow, & a few murders here & there.

Derby Night at White City was just awesome, the place'd be packed, & it had the famous "Derby Roar" as the hare approached the traps. Many a dog missed the break because the Roar was so loud. I well remember Dolores Rocket  - a bitch - wiinning in, I think, 1970 or '71. She missed the break, but came off the rail on the last bend to due to crowding and ran round her field to win going away in a veey good time.. She also won the St Leger later that year. I also watched Patricias Hope win it back to back in, I'd think, '73 & '74.

I'm waiting for them to make crayford a supermarket, what a dump that gaffs turned into.

it's like a glorified pub/nightclub with 200 18-25 year olds and their girlfriends getting mashed on vodka and redbull inside the bar with no interest whatsoever in the dog meeting that happens to be going on outside, whats the point? go to a pub or a night club!

Ive popped over there a couple of times in the last two months on a Saturday night and if you've got any interest in proper dog racing i suggest you steer well clear of crayford, none of the faces are there anymore, no real punters at all.

because they're all staying inside and betting on the tote it fucks the outside market up,theres such a disparity between the tote and on course it's stupid, its so weak my pal had 60 pound on the 3/1jf which compelled the bookmaker to make it 5/2f, you just cant believe it.

I asked tony morris how much he took on the last race he said: 35 quid!!!!!!!!!!

I said why do you still come, he said "this is my game, its better than sitting indoors watching eastenders"!

I understand that with in betting shop and online gambling growing dog racing as a night out is becoming less popular and that maybe dog tracks have to start marketing there venues a little differently and appeal to people looking for a good night out but for me the dog racing should always come first at a dog track and at crayford its just not even funny how oblivious the drinkers are to whats going on outside of the bar.

do not go to crayford for a night out if you have any aspirations of having a dog bet!

JESUS CHRIST Bolt, l put this thread up to get a bit of interest generated in one of our dying sports. Anyone reading your post that was thinking of going for a night out to the dogs will be REACHING for a rope or the nearest Stanley knife. Also Bolt, all who are involved know of these problems AND ARE TRYING TO CHANGE PEOPLES VIEWS. Most people like you and l enjoy a punt on a good percentage market and YES, l agree with ur points, but if the promoters don't get these 6/10 packers through the doors then they cant afford to run the amenities. The track will run itself especially Crayford as its promoters are the best in the dog game for taking care of the trainers and dogs welfare. The revenue generated from BAGS /BEGS for Crayford and sister track Monmore is simply UNREAL ensuring their long term survival. The internet markets are much better than the bookies on track mate, so why go as they only want your hard earned. Bookies are SLIM BALLS who l enjoy cleaning. This was not a dig at you Bolt, as l certainly know what you are referring to, but PLEASE lets keep this thread about the Derby and the good things in Greyhound Racing.


The Derby is well under way and my god there have been some fantastic runs, Barnfield on Air being one of the many. What a great Competition it is and if any of you require tickets please let me know.
