Think you need knee cartilage to be world class

Alan Hansen managed it.

Much as I liked Alan Hansen, as a player, he was never world class.

For me yes. Kenny is the obvious one but I think Gerrard has to be there or there abouts.

I think two games sum up Gerrard's claim. Istanbul and the FA Cup Final vs West Ham. Even I couldn't begrudge him the win on those days.

I do think Dalglish has a big clout for this, but where does someone like Callaghan sit? 800+ games, League, FACup, EUFA cup and European Cup winners medals. Or Phil Neal? Tommy Smith?

That last name symbolised Liverpool of the 70s for me as a youngster. As Gerrard does now.

Personally, Dalglish is the number 1 for me. But Gerrard runs him a very close second.

All great shouts. Apparently I'm in a greement with JC's dad when I say Souness was the most important player Liverpool had for many, many years. Ian Rush hasn't even been mentioned. His goals record is outrageous.

Gerrard was a bit different though. He'll be remembered in some bad sides where he dragged us along. In good and very good sides he stood out. More than that though he's played in an era where the European competition is the toughest and all the best players generally play at the top sides. At his best (and to be fair, when in a good team) he's dominated huge midfield battles in his time, vs the likes of Xavi, Iniesta, Cambiasso, Van Bommel, Nedved, Deco, Ballack, Zidane, Davids, Vieira, Gattuso, Pirlo, Makelele, Figo. The last midfielder I remember doing that consistently from an English side was Roy Keane. And I've not seen it since. Obviously he had his bad days but he won a load more than he lost.

I think it's fair to say most of that type of game came when playing alongside great midfielders such as Alonso, Mascherano, Hamann etc but he was always the best of the bunch and always had the biggest say on the games.

He's played RM, DM (FML Roy Hodgson), RB, but off the front man, at his peak, he was borderline unplayable.

I said to someone the other day I see loads of Gerrard in Shelvey. If he turns out to be 70% the player Gerrard was I'll be happy.

For me, he's our best.

Gerrard is going to play more than double the games for Liverpool Kenny did. Who is the better talent is a debate in itself but who is Liverpool's greatest player is more clear cut because Gerrard contributed twice as much work and wasn't half as good.

Two great goals today, no complaints about the red. Sahin could've had three yellows before that but meh, happy with a point since we are terrible at your place.

On which basis presumably Ian Callaghan needs only to be somewhere around 3/4 as good as Gerrard?

Two excellent goals, a lot of poor finishing apart from them and Liverpool desperately need a striker to play with Suarez. Not sure about Sahin deserving a yellow, but Sterling definitely did.  Love his fight though, for a 17-year old who weighs about 8st fully-dressed and soaking wet.

Thought the referees and linesmen were good yesterday. Makes a change..

Good point, but then again making comparisons across generations is difficult. Modern footballers are professional athletes whereas Callaghan prob had a fag and an orange segment at half time. Can you imagine the impact of a modern day Gerrard playing in the 60's? That said I know Bobby Charlton thinks Duncan Edwards was utd's best player so who knows.

It's fun to make the comparisons. Imagine how good Callaghan could have been if he had lived now and had the benefit of the modern training methods.

I too thought he was excellent, and yet he hasn't got a game this weekend?!
