Pardon me if I make a rare exception & briefly mention, umm, poker. It's not normal on this Diary, but the last remaining vestiges of the audience on Tom's Diary are now homeless, looking for something to read, as Tom's Diary has drifted from skid marks into that one subject which makes so much noise, but only a very few can be arsed to read - religion. He'll be doing football next, as he scrambles for readers. So, a window of opportunity for me.
Went to Luton last night for the £100, sadly, the £5,000 overlay was missed by a whopping £1,600. Whoop if you like, but overlay is not the value you think it is, & it will end in tears.
I was trundling along nicely, then this weird hand went off.
Me - I raised up round the back on a 6 handed table with
and get one customer, who pretty much calls any bet.
Flop -
Nice.
Check call.
I liked the turn.....
I bet now, he pops it up, I just dwell flat, theatrically. Got him.
River, bugger, not sure I like this so much.....
I bet, now he snap jams!
Now I really don't like this so much now. He just flatted my pre-flop rsise, so 10-10 is out, 4-4 maybe? More likely, surely, a big ace, A-K, A-Q maybe, though that would mean the case ace just rivered. Anyway, there was 22,000 in the middle at 100-200, & I now only had 7,000 behind, & eventually I called, he can have lots of hands I beat here, though I have a feeling it is a shocking call. He can't possibly have A-J, of course.
He had A-J. I am so bad.
Re-entered, & cruised to the Final. I opened with A-Q, Chandra jams for sixty trillion, I look him up, as his range here is massive, & I only have 22 bigs. He flips 2 red nines. Flop A-Q-9, off to the DC game we go.
The DC was a pretty bad table to play, no value at all, none whatsoever, but I so love playing it, so I pulled up £500 & decided to indulge for an hour.
It as £2 £2, & almost the first hand I played, (6 card hi-lo) I flopped a Royal, (& rivered a redundant house!) holding
on a flop of
I played it stunningly well, & collected a pot of exactly £8, of which £2 was my blind.
I dribbled off about £100 then, just playing real bad & loose, I just fancied splashing around for an hour.
Then it happened, & "the hand" occurred.
We are playing 6 card Hi-Li, & I flop the nuts (flop 7-8-10) with extensions, & A-4 for a bad low draw. I bet out & got 2 callers, one of whom (Jim, aka 77Dave) had the nut flush draw.
The turn comes a 3, & the river a real absolute miracle 2, (no hearts, wiiii), to give me nut-nut. Nice.
There is a few hundred in the middle by now, still 3 way, & I am determined not to lose my customers.
I bet, I think, £120, Jim flats the £120, now Simon wants to take off, & pots it!
I don't do any theatricals, I just snap him off & call al-in. Lovely.
But now Jim goes in the tank, he looks like he is hating life. Jim really understands Hi-Lo, & I respect his game, but I knew he was not liking life here. He asks to see exactly what is in the pot (it is PL), I think there was about a grand in by now, & after a very long tank, sigh calls.
I say "nut nut", Simon declares nut low, & so does Jim - all three of us held A-4, on a turn & river of 2-3!
MBN to be me, & I scoop the high, & chop the low 3 ways.
So, an evenings Luton fun, & a little profit, despite the fact I played pretty badly in the DC.
OK, no more talk of poker. I promise.
loved this post, wiiiiiiiiiiiii
Teacake, what are your favorite DC games and why?
Not sure what you particularly enjoyed about that, can you elaborate? In plain english, like, not like your PHA replies, please.
I almost never post my poker "exploits", for the most part, flop & hand stories are boring, (or disguised chirps/bad beats), & anyway, I'm of the age where I can no longer play the game properly, I mean, I'm even older than Trumper. Players these days are categorized as "regulars" (almost all players who Post on PHA deem themselves "good regs"), "fish", (all useless) or "old chaps" (ditto). So I don't really fancy Posting "hand stuff" as it generally leads to considerable rolling of eyes from the boyz. Quite fairly & reasonably in most cases, it must be said.
As it happens, I only play Online next door these days (contractual, etc), & I deposited £250 5 years ago & have not had to replenish since. I have a Company funded account, too, for PTP purposes, that has never been topped up, & they reduce it back (withdraw the balance) to £750 every year. So I don't lose anything. Don't win much either, to be fair. I enjoy myself, though, & just sit there quietly watching all the aggro go off around me. "I had you beat", "no you did not", "how could you call there you donk?" da de da......
Favourite DC Games?
I most enjoy the split pot games, Super Stud, Hi Lo Omaha, Hi-Lo Stud, then regular Stud, regular Omaha, maybe Lowball occasionally, & that's about it really. I abhor Irish, & try to sit out when it is dealt, though I won a huge pot at Irish recently.
In the split pot games, as you know.....better than I do....it is "scoops" we look for, & in a 4 or 5 hour session, we might be lucky to scoop 3 or 4 pots at best. But they are where the money is won. And lost.
Next up, it's having a lock one end, with 2 or more punters on the other end, & the skill is betting "just so", to build the pot, & keep them both in, as I did in the example I Posted, though that was nothing to do with skill on my part, it was just how the stack dynamics that caused that.
I'm average at best, & thats on a good night, but if I could, I'd play DC cash, Live, for ever more, until I went busto. Would take over a week, imo.
The game at Luton does not always offer much value, & I should avoid it on such nights, but its only £2 £2, & I just sit there & splash around for a few hours. The hands take so long, pass a hand pre & you can be sitting out for 5 or 6 minutes.
I much prefer, & play better - FAR better - if the game is bigger - say £5 £5, or £10 £10, because then it forces me to concentrate, & be disciplined.
I think I'm probably a long term loser in the DC games, but last year, being better rolled, & thus not "playing scared", I did much better, & booked 4 nice winning sessions in the DTD DC Game, the last of which financed my November Vegas Tourneys. Where I never once cashed.....
I really enjoy the DTD DC, though the variance in DC is, I think, mahoosive, & I need to run good to notch a profit.
The games always go silly in the last half hour, when the stacks are really deep, & I refuse to get involved in that stuff, I have neither the will, the desire, or the balls to do that "let's all get the lot in pre" nonsense.
I am, after all, & between you & I, a confirmed nit.

‘alan1506’ won last night’s Primo (£3,410) and Mini Primo (£404), scooping the £6,800 Jackpot for over £10,600 on

who he?
Just a "regular" lad, lives in Wales - where the previous "Jackpot" winner lives, coincidentally. He plays £2, £3, £5, & now & then, £20 games, & if he satellites in, he plays the £30 & £50 Tourneys, too.
Last night, he was 1st of 253 in the £55 PRIMO, (£3,415 ish) & 1st of 295 in the £5.50 Mini PRIMO (£405) plus he scooped the Jackpot of £6,800.
Ship the £10,620.50!
It is the 2nd time it has gone now, inside 4 months, & gets reset back to £5,000 from today.
I'm thrilled to bits for him, I love it when there regulars win decent money. He won a big Heads Up promotion we ran a while back, too, only to get his Aces busted in the final hand.
And best of all, my job is sometimes a bit painfuil, biting my tongue when the moaners moan, or the 13 year old "experts" tell us how to run a cardroom. But it's pretty neat on a day like today, too, as I get to ring him & give him all the nitty gritty. We'll do the "Comedy Cheque" routine, TV Interview, Press Releases, etc. The win has to be confirmed by "Fraud Dept" first, because collusion is always something to be wary of in these situations, & the Account needs validating for correctness, but he came through squeaky clean.
I shall be inviting him to Luton this weekend, too, &
get Anna Fowler to interview him.
Proper star.
He gets Anna Fowler and I got Tony Kendall, FML!!

I almost rung you today, then something (far more) important cropped up.
You OK bud? Not coming to Luton, I assume? You'll be sorely missed.
Peculiar how that Jackpot has gone twice, both to guys down in Wales. I spoke to the guy today, rung him up, smashing fella, a bit overawed by it all. He's a "Care worker" in a childrens home.

So you "loathe" Irish of all the games in the DC format?
I always thought that padooki was your bete noir.
I'm glad to hear that you've come around as I've always been a padooki fan, mind you I like Irish too and often pick it on my button.

In an ideal world, yeah, it'd be nice. We are looking after him though, such as we can, & on top of his £10.5k, he's got a freebie at SPT Luton, & some other stuff. Just to upset Dylan, really, because we gave him sweet fa, though he did get his photo taken with me.

Irish, no, not my cup of tea at all.
Padooki - I clean forgot that. I'd never pick it personally, but I'm happy enough to play it. I'm poo at it though. If the stack sizes are right in padooki, I treat myself once a night & try to stand pat with air & bet everyone off. That always works well. As in always = once.

feel free to ignore my question
I'm working my way round to it! Always leave the best until last, see?
It would help me if you had said what specifically you liked about the Post, but I'll reply as best I can shortly.
Kids eh, so impatient!
While you're at it perhaps it's now time to tell me/us about your record collection when you were a young man.
I need to go home now, Ralph, am still in the Office, I'll do it later tonight or first thing tomorrow. A good question, but a difficult one. It was a while ago.

You should have rang me, I wouldn't have answered though
Yeah I am good thanks, busy busy busy but happy to do so, had a very interesting meeting today regarding my future with the company, ship the contract extension
but sigh at a few mates getting the chop due to a lack of funding availability
No Luton for me, Dublin the following weekend.
As for your other post and me getting fa from the jackpot win, I do think you may have forgotten the rain check you gave me as I was unable to make the 6 max at DTD - old age is a cruel thing
Oh, and what about Jakally's performance next door, not bad for an Old guy ey, I believe I am getting the ipad and coffee machine, he doesn't know this yet but he is such a nice guy and loaded as well that I am sure he will give me them

There is a legends of racing series in the RP this week Tony and yesterday featured Michael Dickinson, focussing mainly on his famous five in the Gold Cup.
There were two stats in there that I found amazing. The first one was his total wins figure, which for a man held in such high regard was only 380 winners ( this was in fact only 2 more winners than the 378 he rode as a jockey)
The second was he still holds the world record for a trainer with most winners in one day which was the 12 he had from 20 runners on December the 27th 1982. What intrigued me the most about that was he ran 20 horses that day and 19 of them finished in the first three. The incredible number in that story for me was his total string that season was just 55 horses, so he managed to get just under 40% of his entire string to run in the first three in one day, this included the winner and the 3rd in the King George.
Been meaning to reply to that for weeks now, Phil.
If anyone follows jump racing, they'd do well to read your Post.
We have Posted about longevity, talent, & freak results today, & the Dickinson family tick all those boxes.
I followed the Dickinsons from start to finish, I think Tony - the Dad - held the Trainers licence originally, but wife Monica was the powerhouse. Michael - the son - was the stable jockey, then took over the training licence, & after he retired, I think Monica, who died recently, took the reins again.
Michael was a fine jockey, a bit tall, but rarely lost a race he should have won. I backed them almost blind, including all 19 of his runners on that famous Boxing Day, ugh, how daft was that?
There was no value, of course, the prices were always skinny, the value - which I had - was in the early years, with horses like Gay Spartan - the best the stable ever had imo - & Silver Buck.
Will any trainer, or stable, ever saddle the front 5 again in a Cheltenham Gold Cup? That, I doubt.
They finished like this.....
1) Bregawn
2) Captain John
3) Wayward Lad
4) Silver Buck (the best of the 5, imo)
5) Ashley House.
Big race wins for Michael, as a trainer? He just got the lot. Look at this for a roll of honour.....
Mildmay of Flete Handicap Chase (1981)
Mersey Novices' Hurdle (1981)
Cheltenham Gold Cup (1982, 1983)
Hennessy Gold Cup (1982)
King George VI Chase (1982, 1983)
Peter Marsh Chase (1982, 1983)
Queen Mother Champion Chase (1982, 1983, 1984)
Sun Alliance Novices' Hurdle (1983)
Blue Square Gold Cup (1983)
Supreme Novices' Hurdle (1984)
Top Novices' Hurdle (1984)
Later, he became a flat trainer, for Sangster, & then in America, but he never cut it, (though he did win two Breeders Cups with the same perpetually injured horse, "Da Hoss"), & eventually moved into another field altogether, with a Synthetic Turf business. No idea if he is still doing that, or even still alive.
We will never see the likes if the Dickinson family again.
Michael was a lovely kid, modest & humble to a fault, impossible to dislike, really.
Oh what wonderful memories the Dickinson's have given me. Not all my gambling memories are good, far from it, but I was way ahead of the bookies with that family.
Here's Monica, with Wayward Lad, in '86.
I believe his synthetic surface courses have gone down incredibly well, some of the new courses in Dubai are using the surface now.
In the interview they did ask him about his time as Sangster's private trainer and he told a story of Peter O'Sullivan visiting Manton a few weeks after Dickinson had moved there. O Sullivan took one look at the turf on the gallops and told Dickinson it was about the worst he had seen, summat to do with the soil consistency. As he was leaving he casually told Dickinson that one bookmaker was betting a 'most flat winners this season' market between him and Lester Piggott.
According to the story O Sullivan had a big bet on Piggott based purely on his feel for the state the gallops were in.
Talking of LP, its never a bad time to watch IMO one of the best rides ever, 54 years old and getting a 6 furlong horse to win a mile race, less than two weeks after you return to the saddle after retirement and jail.

You have just lost all credibility.
Silver Buck was better Wayward Lad?
Complete balderdash.
Well now you know why I packed up punting! I adored Silver Buck, was a “favourite” of mine, & as you know, emotion is a bad thing in punting. It’d be like you backing QPR every week – it makes no sense.
I am quite sure you are correct, but it’s closer than you might think, & deffo not so far of the mark as to be “balderdash”. Maybe.
It’s not easy to compare subjectives, Silver Buck won a Cheltenham Gold Cup, which, to my mind, is THE supreme test of a chaser, but Wayward Lad never did. Lad, however, won three King George’s, whereas Buck “only” won one King George.
Buck won 34 races from 48 starts, & Lad won 28 times from 55 starts. In fairness, that is meaningless, but I need all the help I can get here. Buck had winning prize money of £177,000, Lad around £220,000.
Sources are…..

http://www.famousracehorses.co.uk/wayward_lad.htm
The Racing Post “Top 100 Racehorses” however, have the 2 horses “almost identically” rated, see….
http://www.rlwebsite.com/horseracing/racingpost100.htm
Tell you what, why don’t we let the Annual Timeform Ratings arbitrate? I have the full set of “Chasers & Hurdlers of 19….” at home, (Derbyshire abode) & I’ll pick them up later this week. If the two horses are within 5lbs of each other, (using their highest annual rating) then I retain my integrity, such as it is. If more than 5lbs separate them, you win, & I was talking balderdash, a sort of Mini Red-Dog.
Deal?
Silver Buck was a good horse no doubt about i. He just didn't have the elan of Wayward Lad. Silver Buck was a BMW or a Merc. Solid, reliable. You knew where you stood with him.
Wayward Lad was an Aston Martin. He almost purred when he galloped. He got from one side of a fence to the other with such fluidity, it was like he was born to jump fences.
Wayward Lad didn't stay 3m 2f. If he did he would won 3 Gold Cups.

The world has moved on somewhat since you wrote (I'm paraphrasing), 'it is impossible to go out of bounds off the 1st tee at St Andrews'.
It took a while for the error.in that to worm it's way to the front of my mind but it made it eventually.
Former Open Champion, top bloke, good commentator these days, but remember 1995 and Ian Baker-Finch?
His opening tee shot landed in or amongst the hospitality tents to the side of the 18th.
Some hook!

IBF got the yips with the driver so badly that it caused him to retire from the game at a very young age and not even make a serious attempt at cashing in on the senior's tour. Sevvy had a similar problem off the tee.

Is the first hole the one with the brook running thru it further down the fairway, I seem to remember Ross Fisher driving it into that brook in a play off, which might have included Robert Karlsson in the Dunhill links one year.

I liked it cos you made a royal flush! that's a fun post!
DC is loads of fun! Making Royal's is fun, I Love the DC games and was anxious to hear wat you thought
I think you're gonna hate my next three blogs, i'm listing my 5 biggest, 5best and 5 favorite hands of all my life. There is some boring strategy stuff but most of them are favorites because there is a story surrounding it so maybe you'll enjoy those!
going to PM you about something btw.

I always thought that padooki was your bete noir.
Careful posting such stuff Ralph, lest Red Dog start trying to chat up this 'bete noir' you speak of.
