dress shirts usually have a "detail" which can range from pleated front, fancy buttons, usually double cuffed and of course the option of wing collar.
If you have a good black suit and a nice white shirt (but pref a dress shirt), then you would get away with just adding a bow tie, and i don't think people would even comment.
If anyone does your line is
"well you know what its like, i pulled it out of the carrier after last years bash (or other made up occasion), and obviously after losing my 5st, you could get me and ............ (insert funny name of fat person relevant to evening) in it. So I decided to jazz up this old thing (point at nice black suit)"
This would be acceptable. I would only feel uncomfortable doing this if i knew it was
going to be a room full of serious money
and they were all super dressed up in a black tie MEANS black tie way - but that is very very unusual
(and bongo yes - these things get pulled out once/twice a year and retained for 10-15 years in many cases!)
There's the rub, & hence my question/nervousness - it is EXACTLY that. Way, way, above my station in life, but I'm sort of representing someone else, & can't afford to get it wrong.
I think I'm gonna have to nip to M & S & buy the lot, just in case. "Dinner Jacket", Dress Shirt, Dickie-Bow.
Marv.
2 things
Without doubt get one - there is no worse feeling than being under dressed in these situations - it plays aon your mind all night and will kill confidence
and just hire one - if you are unlikley to need it again - they are only like £40 - but buy your own shirt

It is - I believe he's been nominated for Best Unsuccessful Nominee In The Previous Awards.

Sigh would go for the bow-tie too but wouldn't be too happy about it! Have a nice evening.

get one of those spinny roundy bow ties, maybe with lights attached. that and the manbag should draw just enough enough attention away from your inappropriate suit that you'll get away with it

Whatever you wear, pics please of you looking comfortably uncomfortable in your attire.
If the invite states 'Black Tie', then I'd wear the aforementioned dinner jacket, dress shirt and bow tie. Get yourself two bow ties, one ready tied, and another that you have to tie into the bow. Wear the ready-made one early doors, then when the meal's done, take it off and whip out the other one and wear it untied so you can look suitably cool. The Walther PPK is optional.

Lol.
FWIW, I'm skipping the meal, I have got a genuine excuse for not arriving until late evening, which has been accepted. I'm also skipping the Champagne Reception. And the Auction.
Bit of a result, really, given how much I enjoy such occasions.

Can anyone tell me the
current
meaning of an Invitation which states "Dress - Black Tie" please?
google & Wiki seems to suggest it does not mean exactly what it says.
I want to attend wearing a regular black suit, white shirt, & tie, ideally not black. Am I going be the odd one out if I do?
Serious question, I've managed a lifetime almost free of these "stiff" evenings, but this one is not really swerve-able.
Thanks.
Sigh....
Just wear what it tells you to wear. A dress, and a black tie. Simples.

Exactly. "Dress - Black Tie" seems to be a quite ridiculous anachnorism.
I'm sure you or Ralphy-boy have one you could loan me, if only you were not both 6 sizes bigger.

I have a very nice Dinner Suit that I've not worn for at least ten years that you can borrow with pleasure.
I also have a smashing white dress shirt, choice of black or blue bow-tie and a very smart pair of cuff-links.
The trouble is the trousers are for a 30" waist which would probably be a bit roomy for you these days.

I haven't got a suit.
Well, thinking about it, I have actually. It's a green boiler suit that I've had for about 15 years.
I've had lots of fun times while wearing it, and it has many stains and rips to remind me.
