Also, is it just me or does it take other people longer to make a post itt compared to any other, any other thread I post in it's always instant but when I post on here it takes at least a few seconds to post it sometimes takes quite awhile ? Doesn't happen all the time but quite regularly.

That's because the server can't understand your posts.

Haha, best I just stick to pictures  Wink

There is another FB site where a guy from around the area I grew up is encouranging to send him pictures of days gone by from the area. I sent him a couple of school pics recently received from one of my aunties that I didn't even know had existed (the photo not the aunty.) I have already been contacted by 5 of those from the pic that I had never been in contact with since finishing primary in 1973.

Are you in that photograph, Geo? If so, let us guess which one you are......

It's a fabulous photo actually, & says a lot about the era.

Maybe just me but I've always thought Ian Hislop has managed the rare feat of being able to come across as both posh and clever but not a complete prick.

Yes, but I'm not sure that the default for posh & clever people is to become anappendage.

I can lay claim to being 1 out of the 3, I believe.

Looked on wiki and still unsure.

Anyho...

As you've referenced to you are comfortably well off not to need to work so I assume that means you would prefer to be working for Sky doing the TV gig and all the stresses that come with it than retire and get cracking on making a bucket list and start doing it, or write that book, etc etc. I know you love your job but I struggle to understand that tbh ? Most people that hate having to retire do so due to the fear of boredom or poverty, seems like you certainly wouldn't have that problem.

I'll answer the "retirement" question later Ray, I need to see a man about a dog now.

As to the meaning of "appendage", it's an alternative way of describing the word you used - "prick". Our fingers, toes, willy, nose in some cases, are all appendages.

It's a constant & fascinating challenge to me. On Forums, grown ups love to swear, for reasons which mystify me, swearing was something we grew out of in Primary School. I rather like to try & be a little more inventive & creative with my choice of written & spoken language, & I wince when I see some words in print. I'm not saying "prick" is bad, not at all, but it's not exactly a word you'd use in front of your Mum, or TV viewers, so I habitually look for alternatives, in this case "appendage", "male hen", or even, if it is very late at night, I might get real edgey & say "todger". Remember, too, if you say certain words regularly irl, then eventually, one night on TV, that word is going to slip out. The Live Shows I do are now 5 hours long, so with mental fatigue, it could easily happen. Not something that would worry too many blondes I guess, but I want to be as good as I can at my job, & if I once uttered the work "prick" on TV, that'd be my last Show ever. For lots of reasons, I'd rather I decided when I quit, than be canned by someone. I've never been sacked in my life, & it ain't gonna happen now, if I can help it.

Always a reason for everything, eh?

I'll answer the retirement v work think later.

This might sound bad but I would say prick in front of me Mam, and it wouldn't offend her. She doesn't swear unless she's angry but she isn't offended by me doing so, I wouldn't swear at her mind, obv. Simply my vocabulary isn't that wide and I cba to go on wiki to find a fancy word to say what I mean, I always speak on the internet the same as I do irl.

Ian Hislop never gets enough love imo, absolute institution although I've only actually read private eye a couple of times. I do keep up with the news every day though so probably worth a read

Whilst I wouldn't recommend it, I'm sure you'd get away with it once or twice. There have been plenty of people who have sworn occasionally on television and got away with it.

I guess it's a generation thing, Ray, in my case, the job makes it more important to stay in line, too.

I doubt your vocab is worse than mine - but I am desperately trying to expand mine, not always succesfully. ("enjoin"). It's what old people do.

Are you in that photograph, Geo? If so, let us guess which one you are......

It's a fabulous photo actually, & says a lot about the era.

When showing me the photo my aunty told me that it was no surprise that I was within reach of Mr McKay, the deputy head at that that time and latterly became the headmaster. She said whenever anyone wanted to find me at school they would just have to find Mr MacKay and I would be close by, being carefully watched by him.

There was some truth in that and I explained to her the reasons why.

I was actually quite clever at school and would often have my work finished well before the others. Unfortunately in these days (may still be the same afiak) you just had to wait till the others finished before you moved on to something else. I would bore easily and become disruptive, I wanted to press on and learn more.

I found out pretty quickly that if I became disruptive/impatient, I would be sent to his office. Once there he would give me the talking too and then sit me at a desk outside his office with some work to do. As far as I was concerned an ear bending for 5 minutes was acceptable as I now had something to occupy my mind. I learnt a lot from that man even though he wasn't officially my teacher.

Even at an early age I learnt I could actually benefit in the long run by challenging authority.

Miss Gellatly was actually a very good teacher and taught most of my siblings too. Even after we had all moved on from primary and she had retired my mother would receive a xmas card from her every year. One year she received the usual xmas card, unfortunately from her sister informing my mother that Miss gellatly had died.

I documented before that my family life as a youngster wasn't a happy one, outside the home it was great. I finished my last year at primary being presented with the best boy award for results gained in the final year exams. Part of the award was a part bursary to The Royal High School, which at the time was a fee paying school. Obviously my family where never going to manage to cough up the remaining fees required to send me there so I went on to the local High school.

I had the same problems there with boredom and by 14/15 years of age I found that I could actually pick up wee jobs as a van boy on the milk runs and soft drinks deliveries for cash in hand so rarely attended that last 2 years of schooling.

Think it was a given that the Army was always going to be my best option when I turned 17 and so it proved.

As much as I'd have liked things to have been better in the family home when I was younger, I often doubt I would have had as an exciting life as that I have had.

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction is some law in science I believe.

I also believe it can apply in life.

True, but they were probably talented, or in some way precious.

Too right, he seems to be able to deliver his stuff right across the whole range of generations. That is a rare skill.

Superb!

"It all turned out OK in the end" applies to us both - & I'm not being materialistic here.
