Orchestral sounds like the right answer

Carthorse is an anagram or Orchestra which has "many players", "used harshly" merely means its an anagram

"term in football" is what the l in orchestral here is derived from but I am not sure why, perhaps its a grammatical term, re the use of -ll?

Only reason it might not be the answer is it's a pretty prosaic solution. A basic anagram with the definition at the end of the clue? This is his favourite clue of all time?

Sorry I sit corrected. It was his favourite clue from today's crossword.

Well you read the article, so yes, that was what he said.

It is not an anagram.

I actually think you may know the answer, because you used the word "prosaic", a definition of which is.......

unimaginative, uninspired, matter-of-fact, dull, dry, humdrum, mundane, pedestrian, heavy, plodding, lifeless, dead, spiritless, lacklustre, undistinguished, stale, jejune, bland, insipid, vapid, vacuous, banal, hackneyed, trite, literal, factual, unpoetic, unemotional, unsentimental, clear, plain, unadorned, unembellished, unvarnished, monotonous, deadpan, flat

A couple of those fit very nicely.

EDIT - correction, yes his favourite clue in today's crossword.

Clodhopper!

BOOM!

No idea if correct, but it seems to work, & that was the answer sent to me by the gent from Next Door.

Take a bow Dave Norsden, aka KidGrimsby.

There's nothing cryptic about clodhopper.

'term in football' - term = terminus, ie the last letter?

Loved that.

Quite something that Ivor could become so famous for saying the same short thing, again & again, with exactly the same inflection, for so many years.

Rather reminds me of the football results chap, James Alexander Gordon, he had his own fan club & everything.

The clue (1 down) is "secretly getting uplift from bras or bustiers", which suggests "Cup Hook".

The carthorse clue would start with the fifth letter ("O") of that.

Looks like Posh Bloke, The Milkman & eventually Tighty, were all correct.

Back to Roundabout Appreciation for me.
