You know the 'correct' use of the word factoid is the one that means "something which becomes accepted as fact, although it may not be true" - rather than a small piece of information?

Just a little factoid for you.

I'll have a word with Steve Wright.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Factoid

Here are some examples of 'factoids'

  • Many residents of the Australian city of Mount Isa believe that their city, in terms of its area, is the world's largest or second largest. In reality, Mount Isa is the second largest city in Australia; there are several cities around the world with larger incorporated areas. Their own local council web site incorrectly suggests it is the second largest city on earth.
  • The Great Wall of China is often thought as being the only man-made object visible from the moon.[9] In reality no man-made object can be seen with a naked eye from the moon. Given good circumstances one might be able to discern the result of some human activity such as the changing of Holland's coast or the partial drying out of the Aral Sea, but even that would not be easy.
  • It is often thought that chameleons change colour to match their surroundings as camouflage. They are mostly well camouflaged and they can change colour, but they do not change colour to match their surroundings. The colour changes as its physical status changes and as a form of communication. Octopuses seem to change colour as a form of camouflage (but also as a way of communicating).
  • Dogs and cats are often thought to be completely colour-blind and see the world in scales of grey. That is wrong. They do have colour vision, dichromate, but not nearly as good as that of humans, trichromate i.e. red, green and blue light

The fact that many people use it to mean a trivial bit of truthful information (so much so that this meaning is often accepted as also correct, but not by the OED I may add) is fairly ironic really.

That whole wording of giving u the opportunity to donate money is fked up, but the charity thing does come in handy when u cash in a wsop event. I did the 1% to phil gordon's badbeat on cancer thing, and it avoids awkwad situations when they ask 'would u like to leave anything for the dealers'....rather than 'no, harrah's are robbing bastards who take more than enough out of the prizepool ty', which is what I mean, I now say, 'no thanks, but pls don't forget the 1% for badbeat on cancer'...impossible for them to make u feel awkward plus u do some good and feel like a saint...before taking the other 99% to spearmint.

Right, I have a GUKPT to win...about time Newcastle got a home win

The WSOP is very proud to have featured a gold bracelet event for the ladies every year since 1977.

lol - just how patronising does that sound?!

Well, "very", as the subsequent, & excellent, replies suggested.

Though it did not tilt me - yes, tilt me, & I don't do tilt - as much as the "players will have the opportunity to donate 1% of their winnings to charity" line did, which angsted me on an epic scale. "How thoughtful of them" was my initial thought.

But really, both reactions are unfair, & wrong. Americans just speak, & write, differently, & we know from blonde that the written word can & does come across so wrong sometimes.

And to be fair, the structure for the Ladies Event at the WSOP has always been exactly & precisely the same as that for the men, or "mixed", Events, so there can be no suggestion that Harrahs are really being patronising. (Except, of course, in that they even hold a Ladies Event, but let's not go there).

I'm also still reeling from the realisation that the Ladies WSOP Event was Stud until just a few years ago - astonishing factoid, that.

I agree -  stud is way too complicated for women to understand . Much easier now it's holdem.

Can you make it 7 words please.

"Isn't it time to retire that show?" should just about cover it.

This is the organisation that sells TV rights and exclusive media reporting rights to an event that wouldn't exist but for players' money isn't it?

I think the original reaction is very fair. They're taking the piss - if they'd made it simple to donate to ANY charity of a player's choice I might be more inclined to think them worthy.

No arguments there, it's so 1990's or even 1980's now, it's not evolved at all, & has gone very "stale".

Strange to think that SWITA was the Radio 2 Flagship Show 10 years ago, & Chris Evans was rightly considered the enfant terrible. Nowadays, Chris is deemed the safest & most competent pair of hands on Radio 2. How times change, & to be honest, for all his youthful waywardness, & his excess of all things bad with Danny Baker & Gazza at the time, I'm really rather pleased for him. If you cast your mind back to "Toothbrush", it was so far ahead of it's time, & I saw Chris as a latter day Kenny Everett. There can be no greater compliment.

"Bracelet Blast" # 5 from Seth at Harrahs, telling us that 24 Final Tables at this year's WSOP will be Live Streamed.

On the face of it, this seems to be something most would welcome, though I see no mention of whether a fee will be payable to indulge. But this is a commercial hottie, for sure, & will garner tidy audiences. Good stuff, I'd say.

Well that's as maybe, but I just find it anazing how much poker has changed in the last 5 years. Go back 10 years in Poker - & I do - and the whole scene is unrecognizable. Go back a further 10 years, & the Internet & computer world was in it's infancy, & poker was mainly 7 card Stud, & Draw Poker, with very little Hold Em played at all.

I wonder if the wheel will ever turn full circle, & Stud & suchlike will ever regain their popularity? So many more dimensions to the game, but not "fast enough" for today's market, I guess.
