Our BT Internet connection keeps cutting out, sometimes for 20 seconds, other times for a couple of minutes. Either way, it's made online poker impossible. Has anyone else encountered this problem and was there an easy way to fix it?

Have you recently changed to BT Broadband or upgraded to the 'upto' 8M service?

I think we changed to BT about 3 months ago.

We don't have a BT router.

When the connection goes, the wireless symbol on my Mac is still at full bar which I imagine suggests that it's not a router problem.

I was hoping it would pass, but it's been a week now. Terribly infuriating when playing poker.

I made the original post and still suffer from this problem.  Only way that I have found to get around an extended disconnect is to turn off/on my router.  At times it makes internet poker very frustrating.  I suspect I have a router issue but cannot get confirmation to the cause.

How do you check them?

I think we changed to BT about 3 months ago.

That's not the problem then... when first switching to / upgrading to BT's 8M broadband disconnections are quite common for a few days (usually no more than 10), as the system trys to determine the optimum speed for your line.

If you have a Sky/Sky+ box connected to the telephone line - unplug it, see if that makes a difference. My broadband falls over when it is plugged in, a common problem apparently.

Yeah, in the last week I have been getting cut off for between 20 secs and 2 mins...very infuriating. Have had Bt for years with no problems, will be making a call tomorrow!

It was fine for the first couple of month though, it's only this week it's started disconnecting.

We don't have a Sky box.

I've had BT broadband for quite some time now, but last Thursday morning the 'internet' light on my home hub router was off and I couldn't connect as a result. I spent near to 2 hours on the phone to their indian call centre (despite what they may claim, basic communication is very frustrating with an overseas call centre). I was even told to get a screw driver out at one stage to gain access to the test socket within the telephone socket (didn't even realise there was such as thing!). Ultimately as they couldn't diagnose the problem, an engineer was booked for the Friday morning only for the service to miraculously restore itself around 9pm that same day?! BT reported no problems with my line, router or local exchange so god knows what the problem was. It's been fine since though.
