I was a late arrival to Facebook as well.  Had been asked in the past to sign up, but never really saw the point.  Wasn't until reading about it on Blonde that I decided to check it out.  Not a big fan of all the silly apps they have, but do enjoy scrabble and keeping in touch with friends.  It's also a nice break from Poker when I'm not feeling confident about my game.

I registered after it was talked about on blonde. I wanted to play scrabble. I don't particularly like it and can live without it. However people I haven't seen for years have contacted me, which was a pleasant surprise.

Signed up only to be able to play scrabble with blonde poker addicts.

Have ended up 'poking' old work and school friends though.  Hardly use it, maybe log in once every 3 days to see if a scrabble move has been made.

A late facebook bloomer too, in fact after Tikay was forced to join because someone set up the "Tony Kendall Appreciation Society,"  I regularly took the piss and said how pointless and sad facebook is (without actually seeing it btw).

Anyway I joined about a month after that purely because I bowed to popularity pressure.  Very glad I was too, because I have found old school & college mates and other people have found me who live across the other side of the globe, so it is great for that.

There is nothing instant about it (unlike MSN) so you can reply and use it at your own leisure.  You can also add as much or as little information about yourself as you want.  Actually it was on the news last night about the posibility of people using facebook to get info on people to be able to take over their identity and defraud them.  Personally I think people that put on EVERY bit of info about themselves are asking for trouble.  Why the hell would you put your mobile number on there??  I dont even put my year of birth for that reason (honest lol.)  Just keep it simple and use the personal email option to hide stuff.

The photo bit is great and also agree the pointless applications that people add drive me nuts, but if that's there bag then carry on and I will carry on ignoring......

I agree with you to a certain extent Chilli, but on facebook only ppl you accept as a friend can see your profile, unlike Bebo/MySpace etc...

I've re-met people on there as diverse as primary school friends, senior school friends and my secretary from 1993!

leaving aside all the applications (poking etc, I don't really "get") that is the most interesting part of facebook I feel.

Tikay reads about his childhood friends in the old testament.

A lot of people just mindlessly 'collect' friends on MySpace by just accepting every friend request, just as happened on MySpace The ones who do that and leave personal info on their profiles are the ones most at risk - and yes people really are that stupid.

Actually you can see profiles if they are in the same network as yourself (university, town etc). If your network is London (like mine), you can actually go snooping around an awful lot of people's profiles...

you can choose the privacy settings for your profile to either be available to view to everyone, to everyone in your network, or to friends only.  If anyone doesn't have their profile set to 'friends only' I'd advise them to sort it out!

Another good thing about facebook - you can keep in touch with Flushy on there!

A security company went and did this and collected loads of info - certainly enough to clone someone's identity.

Their name was an anagram of "ID Fraudster" as well.

Another worry would be how secure your friends accounts are, it's all well and good only letting your friends see your details, but if their account gets compromised then your details are too.

Additionally it seems that facebook staff are allowed to browse profiles (+other hidden info) at will.
