£100 freezout at Luton. 25 left. Blinds 200-400.

In the BB with    . Folded round to SB who limps. SB is known fish at Luton, terrible card player, relies on being dealt good hands to progress through tournaments, very unpopular in the card room but is seen as value so people are nice to him, I personally don't like him as he thinks he is better than everyone else and sharing a table with him is unbearable at times. But he will never read this so i feel ok saying it.

Mr Big Fish has just won a nice pot by lucking out on someone, he has approx 25k, i have 9k.

Anyway, the big fish has limped, what would you do? check to trap or raise? If raise, How much?

I think about it and make it 1k extra. Is this enough to get rid of the arrogant fish?

Obviously not!!!! He flats calls again, must have an absolute monster i think to my self, never mind we will see a flop and maybe i can outflop him.

Flop comes

Beautiful, the fish checks and i trap check. Ok no prob, i'll bet the turn and he will fold.

Was i right to check here? If not what should i have bet?

The turn brings the  . Not the best card i could have hoped for but the fish checks again. Nice i think, i will bet 2k now, take the pot there and then, next hand. Sigh, fish declares he feels lucky and calls again. Hmm, Is he slow playing AA?

Anyway, did i bet the right amount to get Mr Obnoxious off the hand?

River

He then decides it would be a good idea to bet 3k into the pot?

Am i beat? He surely hasnt hit runner, runner flush or called all the way for a 5 to hit a straight? Or even slow played AA?

What would you do? I now have 5.5k

Call, Fold or All in.

Comments on my play please and of course, and most importantly, comments on the Fish.

Thanks in Advance

Vince.

Bet the flop, you think he is going to fold an Ace? and if he doesn't have it what can he hit that will suddenly want him to call
and go all in on river.
Another reason to bet flop is the fact that if he hadn't bet you would need a psb to get all his chips. You need to plan how to get all chips from the flop and the way to do that is bet flop and turn

I would stick in 2000 on the flop and look to build the pot big enough to to get all in on the turn making it very hard for him not to call.

Fish tend to call not lead. You know if he calls the first bet, you will have all his chips (apart from being outdrawn).

i agree..not betting the flop here is almost disgracefull against the oppo you described. You are also betting to build the pot NOT to get oppo "off the hand"..that's beyond weak..it really is and I'm almost inclined to say "Mr fish" was not the only one playing fishy at that table.

100% agree, turn card is a scary one to progress to the river with.

You don't stick all the money in on the turn because you're scared. You can stick all the money in on the turn because you've been betting to build the pot sufficiently pre-flop and on the flop.

OK the fish in Celtics story is my good self.
A different view of the hand.
In a moment of Tikay style madness I look down and find what look like aces. It has folded round to me in the small blind. I flat call trying to get the BB a well known friendly Scottish player to commit himself to the hand with a raise. He duly does seeing my flat call as weakness.
Down comes the flop. I have a set. The top set. Not going to blow it now by looking at my cards.
I check........crafty BB checks behind.
The turn comes an innocuous diamond.
I check he bets 2000....I have top set..... I call
River comes a diamond. I bet out confident that my opponent does not have the flush.
My opponent comes out with the line "I don't believe you can have the straight or the flush...........I call"

Imagine my surprise and embarrassment when on showing my hand I found that I had misread my hand. It wasn't aces. It was in fact
 Two Diamonds

and I had in fact hit both a straight and a flush

Still look on the bright side. They went to a good home and were not wasted as the one remaining player and I came to an accommodation.

By the way the lucking out in the previous hand was the hand I posted here as regards the Q9.

And just to prove that the cards / luck thing is cyclical I hit in last nights tournament quads twice and went on to a result again. For a funny game, poker really does have the ability to make one cry.
