I'm trying to block that image - it's probably a breach of the online safety act.

Bottle tops that don't come off.
FAAARK! How irritating are they?
What a stupid idea. Who throws a bottle away separately anyway?

I was thinking about Victoria Coren last night, as you do, and I wondered why her TV quiz show is called Only Connect.
Now I know that the show is about connecting things, but it still seemed to be a rather clunky title, so I Googled it and found that Only Connect is a reference to a quote by EM Forster, and off I went down the Google wormhole.
BTW, have you noticed that when you google something now, AI does a quick scan of everything available on the subject and then gives you a brief synopsis of all the results. For instance, "Try googling Only Connect Forester" and you will see what I mean.
AI and algorithms combined are an amazing but disconcerting phenomenon. I accidentally clicked on an advert for ear wax removal about 3 months ago and now when I read the news on my phone at breakfast the stories are interspersed with graphic pictures and text promoting ear wax removal techniques.
How do you tell AI to behave?

Also, does having Google at your fingertips cause you to want to ask more questions? I'm Googling stuff all day now that I can.
Watching a TV show: Where have I seen that bloke before, what was he in?
Hit pause button.
Google cast list, find actor's name, Google list of stuff that he's been in, usually found on Wikki which opens a whole nother can of worms.
Half an hour later, back to the show.
What exactly is Police code 10 89?
Hit pause button.
Google police code 10 89, spend 10 minutes worrying if AI will alert the anti-terrorist squad, who will then investigate me...
Back to the show.
Why is the forestock on that police shotgun green?
Hit pause button, etc etc.
I wonder if I even wondered about all this stuff when I couldn't easily find the answer?

If you Google and add -AI at the end then it won't give you the AI summary
The reason to do so is that the AI summary often displays things that are just wrong, and even more frequently misleading
For example the other day I Googled a roundabout near me. The AI summary had the name of the roundabout and it's location with a Google maps link and a picture.
Except the Google maps link was not a link to this roundabout - it was a map link to a completely different roundabout around 700 miles away
And that's a fairly benign example of the AI having a distinct lack of I

That's a great line. I will be stealing it and passing it off as my own.

Voice search struggles with a Yorkshire accent too. When I say "On yonder Hill" it translates it as "Onion drill"

Much better to use my system & have a look on Wiki & google BEFORE watching the Show. That's what normal, well-adjusted people do.

Sigh...
This is a source of constant irritation.
I send Tony suggestions for something to watch on TV or listen to on the radio. He can't take my word for it that it's good or even watch a bit of it and make his mind up as he goes, instead he immediately Googles it so that there are no surprises, he knows how it ends and it is no longer worth watching.
I can write 3 paragraphs praising some documentary or film that I think he would like and he replies with, "Nah, sounds shite"
On the plus side, (For him) He gets more pleasure from irritating me than he does from watching the things I suggest.

That last sentence is right on the money, & I feel I've achieved something worthwhile today.

And before people say I'm pervy, I don't only think about Victoria Coren at night. I also think about Professor Hanna Fry and Professor Alice Roberts.

talking of tv shows - have you watched Silo? It's very good imo. At first it seems to stretch credibility, but slowly as a background to the plot they drop in bits and pieces of how the people live as if to scold you for doubting.

I will give it a go, no Googling required.
What channel is it on?
