When I saw it I knew it must be a little bit rare so I asked a bird watcher I know what it might be.

As soon as I said "green thing, red crew cut, pecking at grass" he knew exactly what it was.

Obviously I had to check it out on the internet and I found it very interesting researching my little garden friend helping with my ant problem.

The site I found it on was saying that it is one of those birds that can often get people more interested in bird watching.

I have to say I could fully understand why.

It wasn't quite enough to 'get me' but it had a damn good go.

I have a video clip I took on my weddingmoon of a bird having a dip in a swimming pool. Filmed it mainly for the missus' dad as he is into birds and seemed pretty excited as he had never seen that particular species before.  Not actually sure what it is. Might post it when i get home if you would like to identify it? Although poorly filmed bird videos and skidmarks are not normally the best items to up the view counts.

There's enough potential here to get me back to the thread tonight.

I feel I may be disappointed though.

What I want to know is, how much tax would a UK businessman be paying of 21 million per annum? Do we have anyone left who earns that much, (tikay doesn't count) or have they all buggered off to countries who understand that it's better to have 15% of everything than 90% of nothing?

The answer is it depends.

If the income is in the form of a salary or cash bonus and the person is British, and was domiciled in Britain (lives here) then they would probably pay 50% as long as they don't try and "avoid it".

If the "income"  is a capital gain (as Mitt Romneys would have been) - ie he bought some shares for $20 and sold them for $41m then the gain would be taxable (assuming they are held in the UK) at 28%

Lewis Hamilton will probably earn $40m this year but he has chosen to live in Switzerland so that he is not subject to UK income tax, so his bill will be very low (he has to pay a a bit - depending on how many days he is in the UK) - although this will be more in income tax than UK poker players pay.

Joe Lewis or Philip Green live in Bahamas /Monaco so equally pay no UK income tax on their hundreds of millions of income.

It is legal in the UK to arrange your live / income streams in such away as to minimise the amount of income tax you pay. To evade the tax you legitimately (according to statute) owe is illegal.

All governments have the option to change these rules but they choose not to.

For example if you are an American and live in say Monaco then you still of US income tax.

Thanks for taking the time to give me such an excellent explanation Nick. (I assume you must be a bloke?).

Mrs Red is from Newark, I did my courting there. Do you still live there, if so, whereabouts?

PS- I think this line is supposed to read -
For example if you are an American and live in say Monaco then you still owe US income tax.

If that is the case, I'm flabbergasted.

Yes i lived in Newark for 7 years - met a girl and moved away - it is a great place and when the A46 Dualling is finished then it will be even better - the best connected town in the UK - although they have probably screwed it up by sicking ASDA in the middle of it. Used to live close enough to town, to be able to wander in to get a Starbucks in the Market Place, drink it reading the paper on the way back before starting work.

Your barman was barmy.

Wikki says

Synanceia is a genus of fish of the family Synanceiidae, the Stonefishes, whose members are venomous, dangerous, and even fatal to humans. It is the most venomous fish in the world.

the video is 367mb and 4:14mins long. It is pretty boring and has some very dodgy narration consisting of my mainly taking the piss out of my better half. So i will just post a screenshot. I am guessing it is from the Kingfisher variety. Apologies for the quality. No more spamming from me.

The first is an orange weaver, ( I think) the second is a red-whiskered bulbul.

That most certainly is the case. Good luck not giving uncle Sam his slice on your foreign earned income if you want to remain a US Citizen!
People I know, who worked in call centres in the UK (and not majorly well paid, even for the industry, I might add) would pay tax in the UK and then have to keep a little more than they'd like aside every month in order to be able to pay Uncle Sam off once a year, even though they hadn't lived in the US for quite a long time.
[/quote]

Whilst it is certyainly true that you still owe the IRS tax on any earnings anywhere in the world it isn't quite as simple as that if you are working in a country that the US has a tax treaty with wehereby you don't have to pay full tax to the US but your US tax rate applies ie. if you are in the UK and working there is a tax treaty so if your UK tax rate is higher than you would pay in the States you actually don't owe the IRS anything.  If it is the other way around then you have to pay the difference  ie if you pay 38% income tax here but your US rate would be 40% then you pay the 2% to the IRS.  Surprised Mulhzz's mates in the call centre had to pay Uncle Sam anything as my missus never had to pay anything when she had a low paid job in the UK.  Also you do have to pay even if you only have a green card not just citizenship.  Basically when the great United States of America grants you a green card they are actually granting you the obligation to pay US taxes irrespective of where you live (excepting tax treaty countries as explained) for the rest of your life if you don't want to give up that right to US residency.  It has been a matter of some  consternation in my household as my wife has a green card and desperately wanted the option to US residency largely because, at the time, her entire family are US citizens or residents and her father had cancer.  It is a truly horrible situation the States puts you in then!!!
