OK say, just for the moment, that I decide to go down the external hard drive route. How do I actually copy my stuff across, and could I also back up Mrs Red's tripe too, without getting them mixed up (With hilarious consequences)

Because I'm too idle to get up and find the remote, I'm watching Sid James in "Bless this House"

Very funny it is too, if you're 5 years old. Any older and it's utter drivel. The trouble is, I can remember watching it in my 20s and enjoying it. Were we really ever that innocent, or was it just me?

No we were that onnocent

Mind you, some of the old shows do stand the test of time. Rising Damp for example, I still roll about laughing at that.

Steptoe and Son when they partitioned the entire room in half, including the telly, half a screen each. Harold wants to watch the opera. Albert wants to watch the football.

Harold: I have human rights on my side.

Albert: I have the knobs on my side....

I've been putting this off for about 4 years, but now the time has come. I have loads of pics and docs on my lappy and I need to back them up. (especially as this lappy is on its last legs)

What's the best (By best I mean easiest, cheapest and most fool proof) way of doing it please?

stick them in your diary on Blonde?

Seriously..external harddrive for the win for me...they're dirt cheap these days.

What do you call dirt cheap? Remember, I haven't been brought up in the manner to which you have become accustomed.

£56,--

When I say dirt cheap I don't mean "It's the price of an ice-cream in the 1950s", I mean it's dirt cheap compared to what you get for it and how expenive they used to be (still are in some places).

p.s. the manner to which I have become accustomed is "own brand" Red Label Tea, water as drinks and Tesco/Asda shirts and all that stuff for clothes lol...ask MrsB how cheap I am (though she'll readily admit I can waste money  but not on something useful Smiley )

£56 FFS!! I've bought cars for less than £56.

How do I get my valuable stuff (and Mrs Red's junk) on it without mixing them up?

Do I save my programmes as well or just pics and docs?

Do I download them individually or can I do it all at once?

A few months later, how do I know what's new and needs backing up, and what's already backed up?

Come on, you have to earn this £56 quid.

That's techy stuff you're asking me...I don't know that stuff! I just know this is good and cheap and you can drag your stuff onto it...that's as far as I go.

I am sure Bongo or some other Uber-nerd can help you out with the techie stuff Smiley

Some idea of how big the files you want to save are would be helpful. An USB Flash Memory Key Stick if files aren't massive are probably the cheapest option. As for copying them across its very easy and quick, right click on the folder or file then from the drop down menu click on Send To then chose the USB Key or whatever media you are saving them to. The only other alternative I didn't mention was if your laptop has either a CD RW or DVD RW then you can copy the files straight to disc.

RED, How big is your hard drive now, do you need a 500GB external drive? If not you can get them quite a bit cheaper from several places (I use http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/ personally)

As for a few of you questions...

You can get free back up utilities online and I'm certain windows comes with one, though I have no idea how good it is. Most will make a copy of your hard drive and back up again whenever you ask it to (making another mirror copy).

Not mixing up yours and MrsRed is simple and a little common sense, just create 2 folders with your names on, back up yours to to one, and MrsRed's to the other (feel silly asking now? lol Wink )

If saving without a utility, some programs you can back up, some won't... I always have installation files saved on a separate disk in case I ever need them again and can't get another copy easily. As for all the pics and docs, just create a few folders on the new HD  and drag and drop the things across, it's really very simple.

I have 60GB split into two separate sections (Drive C and drive D)  Drive C is almost full, drive D is almost empty

It's really only the pics and docs I need to save, the programmes etc I could download again (I think)

Porridge yes, great writing, and so many strong characters. Godber, Mr Baraclough, Mr Mackay, Blanco, Lukewarm, 'Horrible' Ives, and my favorite, Hislop, played by the late great Brian Glover.
