Next you fix the grindstone to the axle, shimming it up by inserting carpet tacks and binding with insulation tape until you get it running absolutely dead true. Click to see full-size image. |

The next step turned out to be really difficult. Not because it was hard to assemble, but because it was almost impossible to get hold of the parts. The thing is, you need a wheel off a pram like this one. Back when we used to use these bikes to make a living, baby carrages were common, and you could find a discarded wheel anywhere, nowadays they are virtually non existant.

After a long search my dad eventually found some on Ebay, but he had to buy the set of four to get the one that he needed. Click to see full-size image. |

The next step is to remove the tyre and the spokes to leave just the wheel rim. Click to see full-size image. |

Then you fix the rim to the rear wheel of your bike so that it can be used as a pulley to turn the Jenny band that will drive the grindstone. Click to see full-size image. |
This rim turned out to be quite difficult to fit because it was slightly wide and had to have a groove cut to accommodate each spoke.

That's about where he's up to at the moment.
I'm hoping that one day, I might persuade my dad to donate this bike to Coventry transport museum.
I can't tell you how excited and emotional I was when found that old grinding bike in the museum at Luton. It would be lovely to think that in years to come, someone else might feel the same about this one.

What does shimming mean please? Basically it means introducing something into the space between two other objects to fill or adjust the size of the gap. In the case of the grindstone, the hole is always bigger than the axle to allow those bulbous ends which house the bearings to pass through, and so once fitted, the slack has to be taken up. There, all done and not a double-entendre in sight.
