I think you got lucky here and probably got him to fold a better hand.  I think I'd have probably just checked down the board rather than continuation bet here and let the hand go to any action.  5's aren't a hand I'm going mental with unless I hit trips.

No set no bet for me on the flop..but I understand the continuation bet especially as he checked to you...I just hardy ever make it without notes on my oppo (maybe that's a problem I have more than you have though)

The river bet is fine, as soon as he checks it to you a few times it shows weakness on a very dangerous board. You are right, it's the only way you'll win the pot and it's a good bet as it works more often than not.

All in all...I don't mind the play at all because of the river bet you made.

sorry, monkey jungle poker related humour - in the hand history you posted it says *** River *** but then there is no card in the hand history - therefore its a poker related pun "you bet when a blank came on the river"..........

I think you need to be clear what you want to happen in the hand in advance of putting in your first bet.

With a pair of 5's you are generally looking to hit a set and get paid off for it, pre-flop you are probably looking to get in as cheaply as possible or with extra value. For instance in the position you are sat you might want to limp and call a small raise if there will be at least 3 people seeing the flop.
When you were re-raised preflop you probably should have folded, if he was the kind of player who re-raised a lot preflop then there will be better situations to take his money later on. Remember in cash there is no hurry to win hands as the blinds are not going up, so take your time and never commit too many chips unless you think you have them nailed.

On the flop you should only really be betting if you have hit a set, if you did want to put a continuation bet in then aim for around half to 2/3rds of pot. If he check raised you then you can easily fold and if he flat calls a half pot bet then you may have a chance of taking the pot down on later streets if he doesn't hit his draw.

But remember your hand only has about an 8% chance of improving and if he hit the flop hard you could be drawing dead.

Generally in cash trapping is far more effective than bluffing, if you do want to bluff then try to make sure that you at least have a decent draw to the nuts.

Think about how much it costs you to see a flop (on $0.01/$0.02 probably about $0.06) and compare that to how much you continuation bet with no real hand ($0.38) and you can see that for that amount you could have seen another 6 flops a couple of which you might have hit.

I also notice from your hand history that you had less than $1 in your stack whilst the rest of the table has a lot more, unless you are planning playing very fast hit and run poker then you should generally try and make sure that you do not have a much shorter stack then the rest of the table. If you buy in for $5 and drop down to less than $3 then you should probably top back up to $5, too often I see people lose half their chips and then play far too loose and chuck the other half away by gambling like you would in a tournament. In cash there is no need either top back up or call it quits don't try and win your money back from a short stack.
