u know u have something that needs to be backed up. you will do it next week, or the week after that. it will be too late!

[yes i just deleted a fricking big word doc i was working on and lost about 15 hours work - word asked me if i wanted to save it as the pc had crashed and reloaded. i forgot about it until later. I opened a different word doc, and said naaaah I have the files I need thanks word,having forgotten that it crashed while i was editing previously]

end of random 3:32 am story. gonna be a long night. take a backup innit!

How many discs do you need to use to back up your info? Im going to try it soon but everytime I've tried before it keeps telling me to add another disc as if the one i put in was the wrong one or full?

He had, but when Word had crashed it brings up the recovered files, and Alex opted to save the wrong one.  I've done it before.

Which is now when I'm writing a long document I save it every 5 minutes, and then every half an hour or so, I'll save it as docname-v2, and then v3, etc.  I end up with about 20 versions of the file on my computer, but if any corrupt I can roll back to a previous version and I haven't lost everything.

As for back ups, best bet is to back up to another hard drive, and then back up to disc or even online somewhere from this backup drive.

Ah, OK - I take back my inelegant cussing then.

I do the same as you - save subsequent versions of documents because I don't trust the computer enough not to make a mess of things.

That helps to some degree, but it wouldn't have helped Alex here. 

If the version you've got corrupts, even if you've been saving it every 5 minutes then you've lost that document.  Hence the multiple versions just to be paranoid.
