Wireless access question

I have my PC and laptop set up sharing a wireless connection, does anyone know if its possible to access my PC from the laptop while both are connected?  Would like to play the music I have stored on my PC through my laptop which I use more often.

yes its possible ... no, i dont know how.

I take it you have already turned on file and printer sharing? once that's done it's (usually) pretty simple. If you're on XP, right click on the file that contains your music that you want to access and click on 'sharing and security', tick the box that says 'share this folder on the network' and enter a shared name that you will remember (ie desktop music).

It should tell you the path to the folder (something like   \\your pc name\desktop music) make a note of this or if it's simple enough... remember it.

Then go to the other pc/lappy and go to Network Places, click on 'add a network place' and follow the instructions adding the address (making sure you enter the correct backslashes) of the file of your music for the 'internet or network address' section.

You sometimes (usually) have to reboot both machines after doing all this, and I've had to enter all the info several times in the past for it to work.

Probably a bad description of how file share specific files, but you should get the idea if you keep these in mind as you do it.

Make sure you have a good firewall and SSID broadcast turned off, you are prime target for attack with that setup. In fact don't do any online banking with that setup, maybe think about not doing email, maybe not poker, only webbrowsing. BBC sites, stuff like that.

I think that is a little over cautious to say the least! (and tantamount to scaremongering)

Most people have a decent firewall as standard these days, and AFAIK every wireless router has them inbuilt.

I'm CISCO accredited, I'm not going to recommend anything that's realistically risky.

I'll be posting here tomorrow!  I've been trying to hook my lappy and my main pc up for ages but obv failed.  Can I share my printer too so I can print from my lappy?

I never got my XP pc to printer share, and I have absolutely no idea why! it just wouldn't work no matter what I did. However, my Vista shares my printer with no trouble at all...

Now we have 4 desktops and a few lappys all able to share the single printer, go figure?!

Using an unupdated Windows XP is risky. How much risk is the OP willing to take? Does he still bank on this network? If you do so, without updated XP and AV software, and the network setup/wireless with SSID gets you hacked and you lose 4 grand via internet banking fraud, your bank will not compensate you.
With file and print sharing over the wireless network on machines connected to the internet come much greater risks. Take some simple steps to greatly reduce the risks, to avoid a lot of tears later.
-Update Windows and AV regularly
-Use a firewall that can block unknown programs from communicating with the Net to keep keyloggers from phoning home. Not all of them can.
-Change default network passwords on net hardware. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6367691.stm
-Turn SSID broadcast off. WEP encryption can be broken in a few minutes with easily available software.

As the OP knows, you can never be too careful.

LOL who on earth ever said ANYTHING about not using AV software?! you would have to be a fool in this day and age. I think you are trying to make a point out of nothing...

Where also does the OP state that he is using a unupdated version of XP? in fact he doesn't state that he is using XP at all.

I believe just about anyone playing online knows the BASICS of net security (which you are stating), so it's pointless stating the obvious, even my kids know to use AV software, antispyware programs etc.

As I said, what I have recommended is not realistically risky.

Yes, it was basics in my degree course too, and as I said I have no idea why the hell my pc wouldn't allow it.

If you have Vista-compatible IE with the Firefox add-on module, aline your SSID with the other machines AV enabled XP then ensure the AV source code is gringled.
