I managed to keep an MX-5 in a powerslide for several minutes once - only stopped because I couldn't see due to the tyre smoke.

(It was my mate's car on a private airfield, we had an instructor supervising).

Having driven a few examples (though not the current one) I can honestly say it is singlehandedly the greatest sportscar ever made that I could never own. Its universally acknowledged as the ultimate girls sportscar.

It says he liked the MKII and loved the MKI.

If you've got a bit more to spend, then the Elise or even the Vauxhall VX220 are brilliant cars to drive.

Does it have to be a convertible (I guess not if the Lexus was an option)?

if you have a hankering for rear wheel fun and amazing power, then get one of these :

also indecently fast. you could probably pick up a last model one with all the leather for about 3 grand.

Was going to suggest one of them.  Either the 200SX or a Skyline GTS-T.  A lad in my office got a 200SX a few months ago, and it was around £3K.  Trying to find an unmolested one isn't easy though.

i used to have one when they first came out - my daily commute was from west wycombe up to milton keynes, and the drive up through all the back roads was an absolute pleasure. although after accumulating 9 penalty points in one day on three speed cameras in different counties, I knew it had to go Smiley
