get a bow tie, then you can undo it and wear it hanging down when you're drunk like the rich handsome blokes in the films do.

then I need a new shirt too, far too much effort. I'm sure tikay would approve of a dickie though

No - a BowTie is wholly inappropriate. A cravat is fine in some circumstances, but not this one.

It's your Sister's weedding, & if we are being serious, it would be a gross insult to her not to wear a Tie.

The fact that many folks no longer attend Weddings & Funerals properly attired is irrelevent. You are not a sheep, do what's right, not what the kids say is trendy.

Funerals are easy.  Black suit, white shirt, black tie.  Although the person who the bash is in aid off doesn't really care what you wear.

Weddings, if I'm going to the ceremony and the meal (which I guess you are) then it has to be a suit and tie.  You can always take the tie off later during the evening.  Get yourself a nice button-hole as well.  Ask your sister what colour the flowers are and try and match up if you can.

really?  if it was my wedding I wouldn't really give a hoot what people wore to be honest, and certainly wouldn't be insulted if my brother chose not to wear a tie.  It's the people I've invited I want there, not what they are wrapped in.

Yes - but it's not your wedding. (Is it?). Etiquette is all in these matters.

Here's the acid test. Imagine your Sister is HM The Queen-ness. Would you (if you were her Bro) wear a Tie? Of course you would.

The problem here is with common people, you know, members of the public, they don't understand, see?

not only wear a tie (100% non optional IMO)

But also get a haircut, polish shoes, clean fingernails too.

Also, if you're driving there, I'd keep the car at a low heat, about Gas Mark 4 - don't want to attract attention away from the bride.

I thought it was a wedding, not a period drama.

like here? Brosnan HAD to wear it undone, for obvious reasons.

Get a proper bow tie and a clip on one..wear the clip on one so you don't have to learn how to tie the proper one.  When you're at a stage where you're nicely drunk pop to the gents and take off the clip on jobbie and wear the proper one undone all cool like.

Or just buy a tie.

It is if you're just a guest.  But as an immediate family member, I don't think it's too far at all.
