So up to 1978 you were allowed to do 70mph in your crossply tyre shod, drum braked, non ABS or ESP, no airbags, lol crumple zoned, rusty heap of shit accident waiting to happen. So they dropped the limit to 60, and now that cars are a million times safer we will be forced by "average speed cameras, which monitor speeds over distances of up to six miles" to keep to 50mph.

If cars are safer, more economical and have lower emissions these days then surely they should be raising the speed limits? But I guess they would miss out on all those expensive speeding fines then wouldn't they

People who drive as safely as possible do anyway, people who speed and take more risks will always do so, they'll still find somewhere to drive fast.  I imagine you'll get more irate drivers on the countrys roads looking to overtake cars sticking to the limits!

A while back I compiled a list of the causes of accidents from the police figures for an Autocar analysis feature. The Police had attended around 250,000 accidents and had complied a list of the reasons for the accident. I my memory is right, 5 percent of all accidents included breaking the local speed limit as one of the causes. However, that rose to 12 percent of fatal accidents. In truth, the overwhelming cause of accidents was bad driving, particularly misjudging another car's speed and not looking properly. The Government has tried to bump up the figures to 25 percent of accidents caused by speeding, but typically they had spun the results by including the police judgement 'driving too fast for the conditions'. But that emphatically does not mean breaking the speed limit. I have argued this stuff on the forums of national newspapers and, in doing so, discovered an interesting statistic. Slightly more people are killed by MRSA and C Diff in British 'institutions' each year than are killed on the UK's roads. I'm afraid that a few thousand car-haters are deeply embedded in local councils and the middle layers of the government and Whitehall. Their philosophy is that 'speeding' should be regarded as anti-social behaviour in the same way as drunks fighting in the street are 'anti-social'. It's just that the bar for 'anti-social' motoring has to be lowered every so often to keep the conviction rates up. And one of the best ways to keep ordinary motorists on the brink of 'anti-social' behaviour is to keep lowering the speed limit. Coming soon...blanket 20mph zones in towns using the same camera technology.

If we all drove around at 4 mph (may 10 mph on a motorway) I doubt there would be any serious accidents.

I've posted the stats on the other thread previously. 

An arbitrary speed limit doesn't prevent accidents involving serious or fatal injuries.  Excessive speed for the prevailing conditions is dangerous.  Otherwise, why are our motorways the safest roads in the UK (and in most of Europe)?

If we all drove around at 4 mph (may 10 mph on a motorway) I doubt there would be any serious accidents.

I think you find that rapid deceleration is usually involved in most accidents if we want to be pedantic.

Well thought through proposal to cut the speed limits on rural roads 

So, the people who live in rural areas now get:

• More expensive petrol
• More expensive groceries
• Worse services than the larger towns and cities
• Far less facilities than the larger towns and cities.
• Long trips to get to the larger towns or cities to take advantage of price/availablity/facilites.

And now, to top it off the few cops in the area will be out catching people going above 50, meaning fines or even longer journeys.
