To be fair to Fergie he said he wouldn't sell to them under the old regime. I think Perez has gone by things a little bit better.

All the reports are that the deal was done with the old regime.
The deal with Ronaldo was. Not the deal with United. This is Perez.

Disagree. Pretty much every piece of news out of Spain suggests it was done last summer. Everything since then has just been keeping the fans off his back and trying to stop Utd looking like a smaller club than Real.

In footballing terms United are way bigger. Real are in financial terms but only cos they know if they fuck up they have the state to buy them up. Like when they sold their training ground for some ridiculous price and leased it back

elaborate PLZ

Why?

cos i asked? How are ManYoo bigger in "footballing terms"?

At the moment they are. Obv Real and Liverpool are more successful historically.

Real: Doyle Brunson
Liverpool: Hellmuth
Man U: Ivey

ManYoo were the Tottenham of the north for nearly 30 years; good cup team but never won the league. Also both clubs got relegated from the top flight for one season. Since the $ky boom though ManYoo have grown and become very successful.

Anyway footballing terms:

Real Madrid's trophy list.

ManYoo's

[ ] in footballing terms ManYoo are way bigger. ;-)

Wasn't it 6 months ago the virus statement left Fergie's lips? lol

Brunson has more bracelets than Tom Dwan, Phil Ivey, etc etc

Just cos they won loads of league titles in the 20's does not make them bigger than United

19th Dec 2008

Sir Alex Ferguson launched his most scathing attack yet on Real Madrid when he said yesterday that he would not sell the Spanish club "a virus", let alone Cristiano Ronaldo (unless we can get £80 million).

You had a better side until you sold your best player to them. Being better than them will depend on your replacements and whether they sort out their back four.

Liverpool aren't bigger than Utd no, but Real most certainly are. I cant think of one aspect where Utd are ahead of Real.

They're Real Madrid, not Newcastle United!

Since 1993 (your most successful era) Real Madrid have won 18 major trophies, and ManYoo 21.

In all ManYoo have won 41 major trophies, Real Madrid 62 major trophies.

In the last 30 years, ManYoo have won 27 major trophies, Real Madrid have won 26 major trophies, but in England we have two cups and Spain have one and ManYoo have won 3 league cups in the last 30 years.

Real Madrid were voted by FIFA the club of the 20th century.

I still don't think Calderon did the deal but the fact he's claiming he did it only 6 months ago rubbishes "pretty much every piece of news out of Spain" suggesting it was done last summer meaning the only source is Calderon himself saying they had a gentelmans agreement. I don't know what that is more believable than Man Utd saying no agreement was in place till last Tuesday night.

Given they are the best in the world.

Real are keeping Man U friendly this time around - this was no hostile transfer. Of course they aren't going to say we had this deal done last year. I think it's pretty clear that it was done already going by the speed at which the bid was accepted, the way it wasn't even known they had bid until it was accepted, the fact that Ronaldo was away when it happened, the reports in Spain of a pre contract agreeing fees in all directions if the transfer didn't happen before July 1st and the general acceptance by Fergie that it was inevitable.

Not to mention there has been no denial about the claims by either side being the most telling thing of all.

what I suspect will happen is that Ronaldo will go to Real, play like the worlds best player, and the Man U fans will all lament the sale, but I think whatever standard he plays at for Real, he would likely achieve something like 70% of that for Man U if he had stayed, which would still be a high standard, but not one that is irreplacable with £80mm. Players will always play better for clubs they want to play for so whatever level of play he generates for Real, i dont think you can assume he would reproduce that same level for Man U if he had stayed.
