I think what is even more funny is the fact that ITV4 screened CapricornOne directly after it last night!

I am middle of the road on it ... I am watching it, and I think the continuity they have going with the base looks fab, but I don't know how they are going to pull it off - I think that's the draw, people are going to watch to see if they manage to get away with it.

The contestants are bloody annoying though!

It's good because they are some of the most naive stupid people on TV. To be fair to make the concept work the producers 'had' to get volunteers with below average IQ.
The think they are in Russia on a military base but are really somewhere near Ipswich. They also think that in 3 weeks they can GASP! go into space! They were told last night this would be achieved in a plane type craft (NOT a rocket) and that they would not feel weightless because they were in a low earth orbit. Basically re-writing the laws of Gravity.
Not one on them questioned this.
Not one of them put there hand up and said "So we're going up in a plane? Not a rocket? and we won't be weightless? Hang on a minute, I did that on Easyjet last week!"
Funny cos they are dim. It's car crash TV.

I think I read that the contestants were psychologically profiled beforehand for "suggestibility".

one question I have (I missed the start) - do they know they are being filmed all the time ? Do they know it is being broadcast on TV (although obviously not that it is a wind up) . ok thats two questions.

I cant help think that there is going to be a sting in the tail - some machievellian twist at the end which will surprise the viewer.

First question on the application form: Do you read Sci-fi?

If the answer's yes - bin the application.....

How daft can people be?  Cheesy

I haven't watched it yet so they might well be as dumb as a bag of rocks but most likely its the white coat effect. you'd be suprised what above average IQ people will believe or agree to when an authority figure like a doctor/scientist tells them.

I know what your saying and maybe its more to do with suggestibility and nativity than low IQ but still, believing you can go to space in a plane and not be weightless takes a special kind of stupid. Anyone who has watched sci-fi, read a book or looked at a space website will know that the simple stuff they have been told doesn't add up.

a special kind of stupid.

thats the crux of it. that kind of stupid is the "I'd do anything to be on TV" effect.

tell you what, it's almost worth doing a big brother type show just to get a crack at those celeb poker freeroll jobbies. Cool

When first hearing about this series, I thought it would be gullible yanks (no offence meant), imagine my surprise when I realised they were British.

I did have this programme on last night, but to be honest the chat in VC lobby was more appealing.  I take it the actor in there is in the "know", how the hell he can sit with a straight face and give nothing away is beyond me.  Yes, I know, hence actor - but come on!

If he carries this off without giving a single thing away via a look or slipped comment, someone should teach him to play poker.

Be careful who you label as dumb yt!  There has been development on space planes for a long time now and the majority of what they were being fed is relatively plausible.   See here for details:

http://edition.cnn.com/2005/TECH/space/04/27/space.tourism/
http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/space/12/05/esa.budget.ap/

Admittedly the line they were spun about gravity does require a fundamental lack of understanding of the laws of Physics, yet I'm willing to bet that there are plenty of people out who could be bamboozled by the concept of near space.

I know the one you talk of but they were told they would take off and land in the same plane. The examples in development are flown high into the atmosphere on other planes first.
It's so unplausable only a bunch of fame seeking hippy student types with no life experience could fall for it. Saying that it was very entertaining watching the plebs!
