3 rules of playing live:
1. Always announce what you are going to do before you put your chips in
2.
Try to wait until it is your turn to act (or close to it) before you take a look at your hole cards
3. Don't piss on your own headphone wire
Interesting one this - I've always done this but recently a well respected player told me he always looks beforehand so there is less chance of people watching him when he's looking at his cards. I think I give too much away in any case so if I had a monster and looked early doors then I would probably give too much away.
The reason I don't look until it's my turn is because I'm watching what everybody else does.
By the time it gets to me I know my raising range and how much I'll be raising. I'll have the chips ready to make this raise if necessary.
I also know my calling range and folding range.
quick glance at the cards. Double check even though I know what they are first time and then make the appropriate play.
The reason for the double check is just in case I need to check suits. If I see a pair I will still double check. It's just a routine but if you do the same routine every time you shouldn't give too much away.
Oh and don't talk. That will always give something away. Unless you are Daniel Negreanu or Tony G you'll do a piss poor job of it so just stay quiet.
1) Play online. Live poker is tilting
2) Don't look at your cards at all. Just watch people, get a read and raise/fold/call accordingly. Rinse/repeat on flop, turn and river

I do it for just my state of mind in the hand, I think what I want to do in this hand and what hand I need to do it before I have actually looked.
So say I have 99, and a loose player raises, a tight player reraises, then I can look down at 99 and I can quickly muck.
If I see 99 and think "my god that loose player is gonna play right into my hands here" then the tight player reraises, I may become too attached to my hand and will make a losing play.
I like this.

You can make more thought out moves too, if you like the players and stack sizes behind you, you know what cards you would like to see and already know your opening range at this point, and you can look down at 86s and know that you can open.
Likewise you can look down at A9o and see that there is a bunch of short stacks behind you likely to shove so you can just fold without getting attached to your hand
.
Everyone is different but this is how I play best, a big tell I use to have was that if I am tilting I tend to be looking at my cards frequently before it is me to act.
WTF!!!
If I've got A9 with short stacks likely to shove behind me I'm struggling not to dance around the room.

You're always dancing round the room. It's a bit of a tell to be honest.

I don't look at my cards as I am too busy trying to get a drink out of Kin.
Don't need to worry Tracy we can all see when you have a big hand anyway....

Tell the dealer and the other players that you have never played live before and ask them to please be patient. (If you do this I guarantee they will be)
Ask if your unsure about anything, and always announce your intentions before you put chips into the pot. i.e. "I Call" Or, "I raise 150", etc.
Don't wear shades or headphones.
Smile.
hesitantly adding a clarification to the post of a Blonde legend....
Is it not better to say "I raise
to
150"

Dont use all your 25's when betting 300. They are chips, just leave them in nice stacks.
Do keep all your chips in one stack at the start, you should only have different coloured stacks when you have enough to warrant it.
Dont open for more than 3 times the big blind, and dont raise 5 times the pot.
Do check your cards twice and remember the suits, checking back to see if you have a diamond is a bit of a giveaway.
Dont rush, have a little think before each action however obvious it may seem (even I still strugle with this)
Do wear an I pod if you want
Dont ever ever ever wear sunglasses, it just means your in the bottom 10% of the room IQ wise.
Do talk to the other players and dealer, relax and enjoy it.
DONT KID YOURSELF THAT THERE IS ANY SKILL INVOLVED!
Happy Bingo on Saturday mate.

And when you are chipped up don't keep them in stacks of 10. Nothing says beginner more than a wall of chips stacked 10 high. Stack them in 20s or 40s. By all means try higher than 40 but it's a skill if you don't want them all falling down.

Its very hard to stack on the recovered tables at DTD
I managed to stack 5 piles of 20 the other night. All directly on top of the chip underneath, next to each other at the bottom, and none of them touching at the top!

The ones without a rail around the edge? Yeah, they're not as good
Wonder why no rail.

The trick is to keep your stack close to the betting line instead of close to the rail
