Smileys are signposts for the hard of thinking.

this is true.  is it wrong to want to make the hard of thinking appreciate one's jokes, or should one simply not give a toss?
it can take the shine off.

while we're on the subject here's one thing that peeves me a bit.  You make the perfect 'joke' post, getting the level of subtlety pretty much spot on, but don't use the smilie, then someone comes along and quotes it and spells out the joke thinking they've very cleverly made it themselves out of what they perceive to be your own one dimensional serious post.  Is this just something all the great humourists such as AndrewT and thetank learn to accept as a small sacrifice for maintaining the integrity of their art?

You say sacrifice, what are you sacrificing? The applause?

We don't do this for the applause, we do this because we're smug gits. A situation such as the one you're talking about is a good prize for the smug git.

sacrifice is the wrong word innit.  not really sacrificing anything other than the state of not being a bit peeved.  And I wasn't really referring to my own posts, more other people's in fact.  Tikay's little hidden gems spring to mind - I sometimes wish I had mod powers just so i could delete the posts that spell out the jokes to everyone who might otherwise have missed them, but I guess that just makes me a snob of sorts and probs a bit clicky.

Well done to Jamie on winning the contest, my humble appologies to the Tomas Cibak who came second, when we were involved in a long winded pot, I sang a love song to him, under the genuine mis-apprehension that he was a lesbiant lady with a deep voice. Please accept my appologies and well done on coming second. El Sid.

To Red Dog, Thank's for banging in the paragraphs, not used to this semi word processor - only just noticed where the spell checker is - we have played at the same table a few times - and we sing from the song sheet - even more so when I read your profile - When I read what you said about Mrs. Red, it applied totally to my other half. The light of my life and my reason for living. Met her seven years ago - and there is a thirty year age gap, no she's not 95, it's the other way around. But statistically you can always be beaten in poker, that great poker player and inventor Sir Clive Sinclair has a missus 33 years his Junior. All the best - El Sid

To Mondatoo:    Just what I thought this morning, what a life as I swam 14 miles from the horizon - grateful for everything - As my old mum used to say, "If the Germans aren't bombing you and you've got enough money for a bit of dinner - everything is O.K.  All the best  El Sid
