hey, 88-AA should call twice/fold river.
Why wouldn't these hands raise on the flop?
why would he raise them on the flop?
He's got < 30bbs.
What is he putting you on to lead this flop?
Pair + gutshot? A7, K7? 88, 99, 55, 66?
Any of these hands he's happy getting it in the flop or picking it up there and then.
Where am I making a mistake?
The picking it up there and then thing, but only kinda. Patrick wins this hand despite the lack of 5x in his range which just shows the power of the betting lead. This spot is so good because our opponent is forced to narrow his range due to the board texture but cant cope with our actual actions in this hand.

Ok, so Patrick bets 2400 on the flop, if I was the villian I'd make it 6200 with 88 - AA.
What next?

what are you expecting me to do with hands that 1) dont beat 88 and 2) beat AA?
i'm very likely folding 1 and you get stacked when i have 2.
the boards just ran out unfortunate for him. lets say he has kk/aa and i ping a queen I'm likely getitng stacked etc. theres not many people who are just blasting off here three times when they get called so calling is usually always the best play, but i guess im a fruity kinda guy.

He probably folded AK/AQ on the river and was calling 88 and better. I would be thinking along the lines of do you play sets and two pair this way often, probably not... I call.
Its not a bad play to take it down on the flop/turn with 88-AA either. If he had one of these hands he probably would have. Check call, check call, fold is horrible pay with this range. If I played the hand this way its a sigh call... I mean what can i put you on? Personally it looks like a random bluff.

Ahhh but would you play the hand that way vs Ugotnuts?
Gotta choose your opponent wisely.
Congratulations on topping the European charts Pads.

That's what makes the game so interesting eh! Even us rec's can foil a top level play by simple thinking!

Without intending to cause offence, some plays only work on people who think at Pads' level.
I'd probably call too. Would look pretty silly the times he has it though.

Haven't had time to look at them all but seeing the discussion I looked at this one, tbh I think ugotnuts has a point in that you could of just got Ace high to fold here, any 88-AA hand here has played very bad imo, yeah a flat on flop maybe but on the turn its either shove or fold, probably a fold as all your pair/gutshot combos get there. Calling your bet here on one of the worst turn cards is just plain bad by opponent imo. Once he flats turn though I think your right to jam any river.
Fwiw I don't let you see a free turn either, probably a big 3bet tbh as once I've raised in not folding any turn given stack size. Thoughts on an over bet shove from villain on flop in this spot?

One thing I always try to be aware of is if my opponent is actually capable of working out what your representing when running a bluff. A player has to be good enough to fold, but not good enough to call! If that makes sense?!
I like to think I can generally apply a decent thought process to most hands, but I have to admit the depth of Patrick's thinking in some hands does blow my mind, it's fascinating, and great to learn from.

I think its hilarious that some people come back with sarcastic responses. Everyone is entitled to an opinion weather people agree with it is another matter.

I imagine HSMTT is very different to mid and lower stakes MTTs. Think Pads is also likely to have the hand in this sport a certain % of the time. Results sometimes influence thought processes perhaps if he had it here people would be saying "easy fold I never call there"
