What's happened to Prose of a Poshboy?

He must be thrilled, or I hope he is. His Diary is buzzing along, every few days he pops on, says a few things to stimulate thought & debate, then goes off & lives the dream.

As Forum "Diaries" go, that's as good as it gets.

Adverbs are simply adjectives for verbs and modify the verb rather than the noun.

You are a careful [adjective] man [noun] who treads [verb] carefully [adverb].

That said some of the greatest writers who have lived loath adverbs. But that's more for the way they cause prose to be written in a passive, flowery sense.

I think we get more complaints on the Channel about names pronounced or spelt incorrectly (or is that "incorrect"?) than almost anything else.

My surname is usually mis-spelt, too. Should be two "l"'s, as in balls.

I went to The Vic last night, the surly chap in Reception asked my name, then "Christian name"?

"Tony".

He instantly fires back, "No it's not, it's Anthony".

Think I learnt what a rhetorical question was, if nothing else.....

For the last fifteen years or so, sloganeers have seemed almost to take joy in whacking the -ly from the end of words that modify verbs, littering our cultural landscape with amputated-sounding phrases

Let us hope that Alex's ramblings don't ever descend to those daft check-box things. I have never understood why folks write 3 or 4 lines each preceded by check-boxes. What on earth is that about?

It's OK. I've had people doing it for so long now it rarely bothers me. It just seemed a bit odd as it's in my forum name. I wondered if you were doing it on purpose!

People get REALLY upset at their name being spelled incorrectly. If you work on a local newspaper it's the one cardinal sin as people will ring in as angry as you can imagine. As someone who has spent 30 odd years getting my name spelled correctly about 10% of the time I have little sympathy.

No no, it was 100% not deliberate, I know how it offends, especially from my work next door, & I don't go looking for aggro.

I make daft mistakes like that more & more these days. I spend half my time wondering if senility or similar has arrived, & my mind is going, & the other half wondering if it is just paranoia.

It was, I hope, just careless of me.
