Hi Alex,

Think I will be in Barcelona next month for work, what small cash games do they have for a fish like me if I get some spare time? Also not been to the casino there for 4 or 5 years, is a passport still required to get in?

Cheers.

The smallest games is €1/2 but they aren't deep and splashy with straddles like UK games so it's a pretty small game actually. Runs 4pm-5am every day. They also have 50/1 video poker tables which are pretty bizarre, but work alright tbh.

I always take my passport because it's required for a deposit account, however I think drivers license must be fine.

i remember playing a 50/1 video poker table in marbella I think. Pretty weird but fun concept - doesn't quite compare to live play with the chips and all but it's funny watching everyone peeking at their cards on the screen and stuff

Settled and Unsettled

So life in Barcelona has been a bit different to how I imagined.

I imagined myself playing 40 hours a week of live cash games, getting stuck into some big splashy games, becoming fluent at Spanish and eating tapas everyday.

I've actually barely played 40 hours since I've been here. I haven't noticed much improved in my Spanish despite putting in some decent work and only really eat tapas when we go out. Games are OK, certainly better than anything I could get in England, but I've found I've just lost my motivation to grind them. They are tight and passive, rather than loose and splashy so it's a case of grinding out xbb/hour and I've just lost interest in that.

I feel like I've been there done that with live cash now and I'm looking for something more challenging and fulfilling to do with my life. I still get a massive rush from playing big live tournaments, and love the cash game banter at DTD where I know everyone and can play with some of my best mates. But I just don't enjoy playing here at all really.

Instead I've been playing loads online! I thought moving to Spain would be the end of my online career but I've been playing more than ever. Really like the Spanish sites and it means I can play from home and spend more time with Victoria instead of leaving her alone every night which is nice.

I had some nice success at a recent WPT National festival here, chopping the hiroller heads up so it's nice to hit a some (more!) form coming into all the upcoming tournaments I've got planned. Been sat still here in Barcelona for way too long, I skipped EPT london and aside from a weekend in Andorra, haven't been anywhere for ages!

Next week I head back to England for the WPT at DTD. Spending about 3 weeks there. Then I might head to Amsterdam for the MCOP. Then in December it's Prague which is always huge. It'll be my 5th time there, always love it. Yet to have a big result though, surely it's coming this year!

So there's some really exciting things coming up and plenty of chances to finish the year off with a bang.

I love living here, it's such a sick city in so many ways. I've been keeping fit and eating well, definitely in the best shape of my life at the moment. I love the feel of the place, the atmosphere in the street, beach, squares etc. I love the food and the weather and I'm getting better at Spanish.

However I don't think it's a long term solution. I think I'll be back in England in February. Where and for what? Now that's the question...I do think though, that my days as a professional poker player are numbered.

Have you seen that bloke who cycles around Barcelona naked?

Saw him twice last week, the first time we were sat having a beer at around midnight at one of the street cafes about 1 miles North of the casino, he was wearing a tight jumper on top and that was it, he went past on the pavement right next to us and we all looked at each other bemused thinking wtf did we really just see that before pissing ourselves laughing

The second time was early evening walking back from a conference centre a bit further along from the first sighting. Apparently he's well known in the area

I do think though, that my days as a professional poker player are numbered.

If they are - what a five (?) years or so to look back on.

What do you think are the main factors leading to this?  Too tough online to make a living?  No desire to put in the time and effort to get there online?  Declining live cash games?  More desire to do something else with your life?

I think I've been at roughly the same level for quite some time now. I've gotten better over the years but the games have also gotten tougher, so relatively not much has changed. And I think that in order to make that next step (By that I mean having the skills and bankroll to play ept hirollers, sunday 500, super tuesday etc on a regular basis) you need to either

a) Get very lucky and bink an EPT or something OR

b) Work extremely hard

Right now I've realised I'm don't want it enough for b) - just not hungry or driven enough like I once was. And I'm not willing to wait around for a). It could never happen of course.

So it's pretty likely if I stay on this course, in 5 years time I'll still be playing the same games I'm playing now.

It's a great life at the moment and has been for the past 4/5 years. But when I'm 30 I want to have a house and a family. Can I rely on poker to support that?

It's too volatile both in terms of variance and in terms of legislation. It could just get too tough. Also (and this is the main reason that's got me to this point), I don't find it fulfilling long term. A big win is an immense adrenaline rush and gives you a large burst of short-medium term happiness. But after a few days it's gone really (the feelings I mean, though often the money too!) and you revert to your initial level of happiness.

The German super hirollers who founded the REG charity (Very interesting - http://reg-charity.org/) spoke about exactly this sort of thing. Winning a super hiroller made them immediately very happy but they soon came down to their initial level of happiness. And that's after winning serious money! And they've found that giving to charity makes them happy and fulfills them.

I'm a massive "grass is greener" kind of guy, so it might be that if I went into something that I thought would fulfill me it would end up NOT doing so and I'd yearn to be back globe trotting playing poker fulltime! But I think I have to find that out for myself...one day...

What was your projected career 'plan' pre poker?  ie when you started uni at 18.  Did you have any plans career wise before you fell into poker via dealing at dtd to start with?

Do you get shit from your family regarding your career longer term?  I still do and i have been out of the 'safe' accountancy game for nearly 14 years now and my family still ask me when i am getting a 'proper' job again.

Venture Capital. That's what I wanted to do. Did work experience at 16 and loved it.

My brother jokes around a bit about how I'm a gambler etc "what happens when you lose all your money?" blah blah blah. Parents don't really give me shit. They know it makes me happy, they know I do well and they know I'm going to make my own decisions. Pretty sure they'll be very happy if I get a "proper" job mind. Even if it makes me half as happy and half as rich.

I had the 'big' career decision at 26 in 2001 whether to go to the city, stay in accountancy/CFO route for a firm or totally leave the industry behind and go and work for bet365 and do something i would really enjoy but probably earn less long term!!  I have no idea how a venture capital firm would view your 'work experience' from the last 5 years.  I would imagine you would be pretty well suited skill set wise for VC/city boy type work and given your record at poker i would imagine during the interview process it would look impressive on paper to most VC guys but i am totally guessing.  GL whatever you decide to do longer term.  You have had a hell of a run for 5 years from dealing at DTD at the start whatever you choose to do.

A real job long term will probably make you twice as rich and half as happy.  That's the pay off.

What do other people think? This diary is over a thousand pages and full of great advice from day 1 from blondes from all walks of life. Without this diary I would never have got staked initially as quickly as I did so it's all thanks to this really. Would be good to hear people's thoughts 4 years on.

Apologies if I sound like a twat, but looking for something to make you happy is futile.  Being happy and then going about your business is the way to go.

It's much easier being happy in life if you really enjoy your job believe me.  I have been on both sides of the fence and i know which makes you more happy even if you earn less money.

Time to move on, Alex, you have much to offer away from poker tables.

Wife & family a few years down the line? Deffo move away from poker.

Not many escape the poker addiction as winners, you'd be a rarity there.
