Olympic organisers can thank the Russians if there is a spate of track cycling world records at the London 2012 Olympics, for it is Siberian pine – reputed to produce the fastest surface – that has been laid at the Olympic park velodrome.

Designer Ron Webb and his team of 26 specialist carpenters took just eight weeks to install the timber, keeping the velodrome construction well ahead of the nearby aquatics centre and main stadium.

London 2012 wants the world’s fastest cycling track by tailoring the track geometry and setting the internal temperature high and creating still conditions inside to help any record-breaking efforts.

The timber for the velodrome track had weathered inside the venue for months getting acclimatised to the conditions.

The Siberian pine is known for its straight growing in the permafrost of Northern Russia but it is also a ‘’very malleable but extremely strong wood’’ according to Webb.

Webb, who has installed more than 30 velodromes around the world said the exactness of the task can’t be underestimated.
