Start every sentence with "When in Rome......" , a guarenteed way to piss everyone off you are with. That is what I did when I went there anyway.

Watch out for scamming bastard taxi drivers, the like a switcheroo with high euro notes which all of a sudden become small ones and most cabbies that I used were right miserable sods too. Coliseum is nice as is the place opposite which if you do a tour will probably be included. Saw the pope giving a service on Sunday which was kinda okbut he's pretty high up and doesn't do any acrobatics steve Martin style. Food is nice but fairly pricy, some nice restaurants away from the main squares. pantheon was nice too.

You'll love it, Rome is one of the best cities in the world imo, pees all over the likes of Paris. It will be bloody hot though.
Buy a travel belt and put passport and money in it and keep it inside your trousers. Rome plagued by pickpockets in some streets and many buses, esp the ones that go from the Victor Emmanuel Monument to the Vatican. This is the only crime I ever saw in 3 years living there though. Apart from the Mafia obv who will leave a horse's head in your bed if you cross them.
You gotta do the Vatican and St Peter's, it's mind-blowing. If you have the stamina, climb to the top of St Peters.
There are various restaurants scattered around St Peters, all for tourists, avoid them.
Call the area around the Victor Emmanuel monument 'the centre', from there you have the forum nearby, great cafes and restaurants, shopping, the Trevi Fountain etc. If you walk from there down the via del Corso (great shopping) to the Obelisk, just short of there you will find a bunch of good restaurants, we ate there 80 percent of the time, best value.
Couple of big art galleries around the Obelisk, if you're into that, Dali's stuff was there last time I visisted.
To the side of this obelisk (RHS, with your back to Vittorio Emmanuele) are some nice parks, good spot for a picnic, or a place to hang on your last night to watch the sun go down.

Piazza Navona too, hopefully there will be some evening food markets on. Architecture around there is unparalleled.

Spanish Steps obviously a must, there's a McDonalds beside there, except they call it 'Il big Mac'
There is a restaurant about 1min from the steps, like you go down the steps and keep walking, that street or the one beside it, called 'Ninos', really good, lots of famous types eat there but not uberpricey.

Obv Manuel'sMum clearly loves Rome and has spent a lot more time there than me but i wasn't overly impressed tbh, thought it was over crowded, dirty, stupidly expensive and there are tonnes of pick pockets.
The missus liked it, Vatican was my fav place and I got to see the latest pope who had died. Queued for like 6 hours at the Colloseum and it stinks, the locals will bump you for about 8 euros for a bottle of water, but be careful as i saw people filling empty bottles up and reselling them, make sure the lid is intact! Was 40 degrees and my shins were burnt to bits.
We got a guide who was pretty decent and took us to a load of stuff which was off the normal tourist trail, got to see the old underground city of Rome which was decent. Pantheon is alright too.
Probs better than Paris but nothing on Florence, Pisa or Monte Carlo (quite apt for you...)
Keep your ipad at the hotel, that will be gone in seconds! Ice cream and pizza is decent.
