The majority disagree that its 41.
I just done a straw poll with the Mrs, Her parents, My Mother, The Dog and a 6 year old apart from the 6 year old we all got 1.
The 6 year old says its 99.

The sad part is, I believe that you, and others on here, believe the answer really is 41!!!!!!

So do we agree that 40 + 40 / 2 + 1 = 61 ?
No, it's 41. You've written the question wrong.
Has to be 26.6 recurring, no?

Gatso's guna love this...
I asked a lass I work with who did A level Maths, she said 1.
I also asked another accountant, she said 1.
I asked the head of another department, she said 81, then 0.
I finished by asking the new "whizzkid" F.D, he'll know it surely, ermm, he said 0, then looked a bit puzzled and asked what I thought it was

I understand people going for 1, having forgotten (or never being taught) that multiplication/division should be done first - but how does the FD get 0? Did you ask him to show his working?

awesome. how can they possibly make it zero? making it 1 is an understandable mistake, zero however is distinctly worrying especially for an FD
I assume accountants use excel all the time, tell them to stick 40+40*0+1 into a cell and see what happens

I imagine they thought it was 0 due to misinterpretation of the 'anything multiplied by 0 is 0'
rule.

I was a thoroughbred mathlete in primary school , we played a game involving the multiplication table up as far as 12x12, you would stand back to back with your opponent and mimmick that its a wild west shootout, the teacher would shout 7x9 or something the quickest person to draw their gun and turn and shout out the answer was the winner, I was unbeaten and unbeatable! Good days!
i was also that guy.
still am, if I'm honest
