What do you reckon my chances are of doing 100k press-ups this calendar year?

I am not fat but certainly not fit, and if the truth be told rather weedy. Not poker-weedy, but real-world-weedy. 26yrs, 6'4", GSOH.

absolutely zero

Really? My logic was....

Do them on, for arguments sake, 333/365 days.
Daily Avg. Required is therefore 300.
Start off by doing 100-150ish in a day, and increase as body becomes stronger, to the point where I am doing say 500 in a day.

Simples, no?!

I obv dont know you, your size, how fit or ripped you are - but here are a few examples from this thread (and many dont pass as a "press up")

http://blondepoker.com/forum/index.php?topic=56169.msg1598531#msg1598531

and this is Matt Rusell - who is ripped (and also displays a lovely technique) - and he did 35 - pretty sure 300 of those a day for someone starting at scratch is impossible

That said - please dont let me put you off - why not just try a "get to 100 press ups in 1 go" - that will be tough enough

100 a day would be a good challenge, and doable.

Think this is doable if you can guarantee having 2 mins spare to drop and give me 15 every 30 mins 20 times a day. Without fail!!

100 a day would be a good challenge, and doable.

Was doing this and a bit more backend of last year before falling off the wagon.

Obv don't, it,would be easy but reckon 300 in a day must be easier than 100 on the spin by some distance.

Anyway, just idle chat for now.

As you were...

100 on the spin is definitely doable.

300 a day, EVERY day seems a lot of ball-ache.  Why not try to do the 100 a day EVERY day to start with?  If you can manage that for a month or two, then ramp it up.

5K in 25 minutes is a decent time - and quite a jump from your current PB.  You got a 5K training plan you'll be following?

Also LOL @ Matt.

Of course I have a training plan I will be following Mr Phillips.

Day 1 Run 5k
Day 2 Try and do it faster
Day 3 Try again

etc

OK, so you don't really then Cheesy

There are quite a few different training plans for running a PB for the 5K.  Most emphasise the idea of focusing on one of the two elements at a time - endurance and speed.  Basically, you should look to build up your endurance by running further than 5K with some runs; and then do things like sets of 400m at a fast pace, followed by several minutes of very slow running (interval training) to improve your speed.  Trying to do both at the same time won't help you as much.

You can just run 5K repeatedly, and you will improve your 5K time.  But it will take longer, and might be a bit disappointing morale-wise when you stop seeing the improvements as you get closer to the 25-minute target.

One thing in your favour, in terms of massively improving your PB for the 5K, is that you're also going to be losing weight.  Dropping weight can make a huge difference to PBs. So although you're looking to knock a good 10 minutes off your 5K PB, it will be a 'different you' running the 5K in 6 months time when you've dropped a fair few pounds.  It'll be similar to comparing running with and without a backpack on (of a comparable weight).

Also, remember that rest is important (as this is when the muscles actually get stronger). It's also easier to keep training if you mix up your runs - and do some longer slow runs as well as some faster short runs.

Have you got a target race in mind to do your 5K PB, or are you doing it all on the treadmill?

PS. Your sig is now out of date Cheesy

Thanks Dan

PB is actually about 28.30 but that was back when I did that first 10k and as per your point there was a stone and a half less of me.

35 is the pathetic time I was clocking per Xmas

Will possibly implement some of what you said but won't be running further than 5k as I just don't want to spend more than half an hour an evening on it.

100k push ups a year would be doable but not a chance from scratch.

Even Stu's way of doing 15 push ups 20 times a day wouldn't work. You'd never be able to recover.

If you really want to do this spend 2013 practising ready for 100k in 2014?

Thanks for feedback all. Nothing worse than setting a goal that you quickly realise is essentially unachievable....so am going to set a revised target of 50I which I reckon I,should be odds on to hit.

Currently weigh 15st 12.

I'm looking to lose 7-8 pound by 1st Feb. Don't know if this is too much- could do with some guidance.

If I don't achieve this I will donate £5 to charity for every pound I'm short.

I'll continue to set monthly goals

2lbs is the recommended amount of weight to lose a week, so its a good target.

Why such a short term goal? I'm doing the same thing, specifically because I want to fit into a specific suit at a posh do I'm going to at the end of the month.

Still think you're being overly optimistic unless you're already pretty good at them.

Odds on is certainly a huge stretch. If I were a betting man I'd happily lay you a small fortune.

It's certainly achievable but don't put yourself down by saying you're odds on. Without having a clue about your fitness levels I'd say 10/1 was even very tight.

Did you see the Blonde 100 press up challenges? Zero success out of quite a few starters.

1000 push ups every week for a full year is insanely difficult.

Mainly cos I don't wanna skint myself if I fail. Plus whenever I've gone about losing weight before I've set longer term goals and because of this I've fallen off the wagon sooner.

This way I'll hopefully see the benefit of living a healthier lifestyle month on month
