the commentators today (love having one ear on Mr Kirby while cracking on with things) were talking about Van Garderen being a good top time-trialler and potentially, given the shape of the GC, able to make up a lot of time on the second last stage where those above him aren't noted triallers?
is that accurate? At 50-1 around the place does he have a shot?

I never insinuated they were anything to do with Canbet
Apologies if I misinterpreted something. Often so much to read.

canbet should have been pinnacle but 10 years of awful management (i worked there in 2003/4) stopped this ever happening.

Maybe a shot at the podium, but I'm afraid that Nibali, Porte (especially) and Valverde are all pretty handy TTers themselves. Peraud, Costa and Mollema are also pretty good. Van Garderen at best could make up a minute on these guys ... maybe 1:30 ... but that is all I'd give him ... on a good day. 50-1 seems about right for now, but things can change quickly in cycling. Definitely worth another look later in the race, if we can remember.
PS. After a quick browse, I've found two long TTs where TvG was beaten by Valverde, one where he was pipped by Peraud, and another where Mollema was on his heels.

Without researching the stats TVG is a better TT than Pinot & Bardet for sure. Valverde probably. Closley matched with Nibali, Porte & Peraud.

The Open
There has been a bit of a hoohah about this, what & who we do, when, etc.
It's now being sorted amicably, via PM, & I hope that's that. Please don't back reference it, if you have any questions, feel free to start another thread, where I'll try to answer them. In truth, I'd rather we just moved on.
I suggested last week that we invest somewhere between £300 & £500 in The Open, if we do it wisely, & at the right prices. That remains the case. It's a tremendous sporting spectacle, with 4 days of non-stop TV coverage. It just seemed a good idea to me to help get the feel-good vibes back via some fun, 4 day sweats.
Two very generous donations by Fred Elders have been to made to Fred for Open Golf bets, too, more of which later. We will refund the stakes to the donors if we kop a few bob.
Keep the recommendations coming - justified ones - please.
Amongst our investments will be part or all of the portfolio Doobs gave us, but not until he has had time to re-evaluate, as some things have changed, draw bias, more info, injuries, da de da.
Bobby1 will be putting some suggestions up later, too.
And of course any other value recommends from anyone.
Now let's enjoy The Open, & I hope that plenty of regulars win a few bob, & more importantly, have some fun along the road.
As you were, as it were.

Hopefully we can get others contributing to Open bets today then, rather than just purely a list of guys who are good mathematically. Few knowledgeable types on here.
I'm just backing whoever people say to back. Jimenez and Bjorn so far, probably got terrible draws etc.

Think this was the first one we did, unfortunately price was 28/1 and you can now get 30/1. No harm in pressing though.

DON'T BET IF YOU HAVE ANY INTENTION OF TRADING IN THE EXCHANGE MARKET AS YOU WON'T GET THE 7TH AND 8TH PLACE

Do what arbboy has done and get an account in the mrs name. Either that or find a mate who will just bet one side and you bet the other

TdF ... looks like I got that one wrong. The only thing I got right was that someone would break from the sprinters group. And the decision to back against the favourites. Gallopin did not figure in my shortlist. How about yours, Tonji? Was also not the reduced bunch that I was hoping for. I was expecting the climbs to be a little tougher, and not expecting so many sprinters to be up there. Maybe I should spend some time on Google Earth looking at the parcours beforehand.
Great day's racing though.
