Battle of Saratoga - something to do with the Patriots?

Good stuff on those Baseball sweats. I'm not entirely sure who we should be sweating, but it looks good.

Day Two of the Leger Meeting is on Ch 4 this afternoon.

If you can find the winner of the 2.40, I'm all ears.....

Jets +12 at 20/21 with Corals is not a bad bet. I'm not sure if I'd be strong on it.

Generally last year the syndicates bet under on Thursdays...the theory being that a shorter preparation time for the game makes offence not so dominant and points are lower. This effect is more prevalent later in the season though and it works way better in non-divisional games. Non-conference games are the best.

Obviously if we fancy a low scoring game then taking a 12 point favourite is great.

The stats for 10 point+ dogs are great but the stats for 8 point HOME dogs are WAY better.

I would never bet the Patriots here, not sure whether to bet the Jets, probably should.

You seem a bit undecided, Neil?

FWIW, I spotted this preview of the game on Betpal, when I was looking for Scott & Tighty's stuff.

  http://www.betpal.com/thursday-night-nfl-jets-at-the-patriots-betting-preview

Personally for me it wasn't strong enough to put on here. For a full service tipping column, trying to cover every televised night with a recommendation, it seemd a reasonable way of palying a game. If it is low scoring, all the better for +12

Don't know anything of the guy, but David John at the Sporting Life recommends getting on the Jets +12, and backing Julian Edelman anytime at evens too.

That is spooky.

The David John you mention, & Tighty, who wrote the article I linked to, will BOTH be on the same (very well known.....) TV Show NEXT Thursday evening, doing a Betting Preview of the NFL Season.

Also appearing will be Film Bore James Hartigan, who is a complete NFL nutcase, & a poker expert turned pro punter.

No need to dither any further then, it is time to back up the truck!

Careful now.....

Tighty explained yesterday that part of his remit is to find a selection on EVERY Televised game, hence his write up. I got the distinct impression, though, that he was only lukewarm in his enthuisiasm for the bet.  Neil C also commented on that bet, he seemed (the way I interpreted his Post) also to be a bit lukewarm.

It's a bit like the Tipsters in the Racing Post or whatever, they HAVE to give a selection in every race, which is a bit daft really.

I'll probably have a small interest, but more bubble-car sized than a bloody great truck.

At least give me credit for bringing up first...

I'd have thought that you might be more interested in the 2.10pm race.

It's the "Sceptre Stakes".

I actually thought of writing a piece about my equine heroine, but thought better of it, that sort of stuff interests very few.

I doubt many horses can boast a CV which includes the 1,000 Guineas, 2,000 Guineas, Oaks & St Leger!

 Woodcote Stakes (1901)
 July Stakes (1901)
 2,000 Guineas (1902)
 1,000 Guineas (1902)
 Epsom Oaks (1902)
 St. James's Palace Stakes (1902)
 Nassau Stakes (1902)
 St. Leger (1902)
 Hardwicke Stakes (1903)
 Jockey Club Stakes (1903)
 Duke of York Stakes (1903)
 Champion Stakes (1903)

Her prep race for the Guineas? The Lincolnshire Handicap, for which she was weighted at a mere 6st 7lbs.

By chance, 2 days after she won the St Leger, she ran in the Park Hill Stakes, which features on today's card.

I love the tradition of British Flat Racing. Look at that list of races Sceptre won, & unless I'm mistaken, every single one of them still exists, over 110 years later. How utterly splendid.

I've gone with Tom Segal's selections - Art Official and Stormy Paradise.

That year when Sceptre won both Guineas, The Oaks and the St Leger, she also ran in the Derby on the Wednesday before the Saturday's Oaks.

When she failed to win as odds-on favourite the crowd booed crying "fix".

Yup. She had bruised her foot a week earlier, then missed the break completely.

Undeterred, Sievier galloped her on both the following 2 days, then went & won the Oaks the next day.

Sievier used her as a gambling medium, he was always busto, & Mondays ("settling day" in those days) was always a trial for him.

He ran her anywhere & everywhere, twice at one Royal Ascot & twice at Glorious Goodwood, winning once at both tracks.

She is the only racehorse ever to have won 4 Classics.

She ended up being owned by none other than Mr Tattersall, one of the famous Tattersall family.

Sievier? He ended up in court charged with Murder.

Some character.

In keeping with the great traditions of UK horse racing, we should definitely back those horses that have names that are destined for greatness.  So Maureen at 2/1 in the 2.10 at Doncaster it is.  I was so hoping this one won the 1000 guineas.  Oh So Sharp, Pebbles,  Miesque, Sceptre and... Maureen.  Alas, it wasn't to be.  £25 on Hills mobile.

The Lark in the 3.15 at 7/4 should also be backed.

Err, yes, great horses are always well-named.

Frankel, Eclipse, Sceptre, Dante, Northern Dancer, Troy, Mill Reef, Brigadier Gerard, Maureen.

On my way.
