I'm sure I was not alone in having no idea who this chap was, in fact I insta-assumed it was another Steve Bruce thing.

Anyway, some extensive perusal of good old google told me it was some football manager sort by the name of Marcelo Bielsa.

Quite a chap, it seems, bit of a cult hero, current manager of Marseilles, & said by none other than Pep Guardiola to be "the best football manager in the world" (insert gravelly Clarkson voice).

If so, he seems to me to be a worthy replacement, 4 or 5 years down the line, for the great Arsene Wenger.

I mention him more than Bruce!

To old now to come here i fear, also completely mad (nickname Loco Bielsa)

Best story i have read about him was when at Bilbao he used to walk the local streets from 1am till 6am and would knock on random houses until he found a Bilbao fan (didnt take long) and then talk football with them through the night.

He is quite often quoted as the inspiration for most of the younger managers (Simeone as well)

I rather enjoyed this part from his Wiki page....

As Bielsa refuses to grant exclusive interviews, the press conference has become his preferred method of communication. He has been known to field every last question from the assembled media during these gatherings. If the talk turns to the intricacies of the game, a three- or even four-hour press conference is possible

Yes he likes to grind down the press boys!

His high pressing very high workrate style usually wear off after half a season or so. Marseille have started brilliantly expect them to fade come Jan Feb a bit

What a guy he was.

Players like Don Rogers & Terry Paine where huge heroes of mine back in the day.

They'd both have earned a pretty penny these days.

Wow, you must be young.

HUGE name in his day, I believe Swindon Town even named a stand in his honour.

Arsenal fans, ruefully, will remermber him, for sure.

Wiki tells us that on one occasion he was in a "swap deal" with another player by the name of Terry Venables. Whatever became of him?

Daily Report

Profit on Month £0

Outstanding Bets £4251.02

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Aia1Hxq-NDNWdFk3UmlTSXMzTjRBTVNfOWRndVFsZHc&usp=drive_web#gid=30

No bets completed yesterday

In play currently Andy Murray has taken the first set 6-1 against Marian Cilic in the quarter final of the ATP China Open and is 3-2 up with a break in the second

The Kansas City Royals began their five game ALDS series against the Los Angeles Angels last night. The AL West champions Angels were prohibitive favourites with a very powerful line up highlighted by all time great slugger Albert Pujols, who they recruited out of the national league with a $200m contract specifically to win them titles, and the excellent young player Mike Trout, last year's rookie of the year. Thier pitcher was their ace, Jared Weaver

The Royals had flown to LA straight after their wild card victory, and pitching for them was Justin Vargas. Erratic and inexperienced

The Royals took a two nil lead, but the Angels came back to 2-2 after 4 innings

The match then took on the attritional characteristics you expect of Royals games. Good defense, strong pitching and not a lot of hitting. At the end of the seventh inning Vargas was replaced and the bullpen of relief pitchers came into action

After the regulation 9 innings the match was still tied, so once again it was extra innings

In the eleventh inning, with two outs, number nine hitter (the spot reserved for the worst hitter) Mike Moustakas hit a solo home run to take the Royals ahead

It was now down to the Royals closers, closers being really fast pitchers, often with nasty sliders and cutters, their job being to "close" games out. The first two outs came quickly and in came one of the best closers in the league Greg Holland. He had not flown to LA with the rest of the team as his wife was due to give birth. She did yesterday. He attended, got on a flight and was now in the game. One out required.

He got the out, the Royals took a 1-0 lead

The bullpen had allowed one hit over five innings.

They play the second game tonight with our old friend the fireball throwing rookie Yordano Ventura at the plate for the Royals

This has begun to have the look of one of the great stories, whatever happens from here

--

Meanwhile, things were complicated in Tighty land. Simultaneous to the Royals, The Green Bay Packers were playing the Mnnesota Vikings. One side of the bed had laptop and MLB stream, the other tablet and Sky Sports. Soon, both needed charging. I lay motionless, with chargers and extension cords everywhere. I contemplated moving the bed towards the plug sockets.  I decided it was too much trouble. I did though have to postpone updating my quarterback rating spreadsheets, which was frustrating

We have the Packers to win the Superbowl, and Aaron R for comeback player of the year. The Packers have had a mixed start to the season, 2-2 record but caught a break last night when rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was ruled out for the Vikings and Christian Ponder had to play, at Lambeau off a short week. When Ponder was drafted and played for Minnesota previously the playbook was reasonably simple. Pages 1-32 contained the same instruction "Hand the ball off to Adrian Peterson". With that option not available, Ponder struggled and Green Bay led 42-0 at the end of the third quarter at which time Rodgers was rested

He had 156 yards and three touchdowns. The Vikings defense gifted another three touchdowns

A below average 156 yards was actually great news for our Matt Ryan bet, as in a 42-0 blow out 300-400 yards would be feasible, except much of this was Vking self destruction

Running back Eddie Lacy, like a green pick up truck with dreadlocks, ran over the defense all night for over 100 yards and two touchdowns

Interestingly, because i don't think Thursday night football really works, too much of a disadvantage to the away team, the aggregate score on the last five thursday games is now 179-36 to the home team

Breaking news from the politics department

last night's Yougov, post the Conservative conference saw blue ahead of red for the first time since March 2012

CON 35% LAB 34% UKIP 14% LDEM 6%

Feeding it all in to Electoral calculus shows armageddon for the LD's

Yougov show 2010 LD "agree with Nick" vote disperse to 4 corners. 28% retained. Lab: 37% Con: 10% UKIP 11% Green 11%

No UKIP seats, which i think is correct

Incredibly, 10/11 under 32.5 LD seats Ladbrokes is still available

http://www.oddschecker.com/politics/british-politics/next-uk-general-election/total-seats-liberal-democrats

This is now my single biggest bet lifetime. Yesterday i counted, i have gone in 17 times and the seat spread has moved down one spot

Next may, you'll find me in a hostel if Ladbrokes are right

Those Daily Reports just get better & better, & that Baseball tale was quite something - again.

This amused, too....
