All games drawn in Wijk aan Zee, so it's as you were.

View of the playing hall. Side events in the foreground. The challengers and the main event are at the back.
What a great photo that is, Simon, it all looks rather exciting.
Guess at the lower - or less exalted levels - it's not quite so grand, so regimented. What sort of venues would Club players use - Church Halls, Hotel Conference suites, that sort of thing?
PS - I just read you had a deep run at Old Trafford - congrats - & almost as wonderfully, were acquainted again with the Bromley's. (Is that apostrophe correct, it feels wrong somehow?) I would imagine you get on very well indeed with them both.

I have realised this morning I haven't said when this chess bet is due to finish. The tournament is 13 rounds (14 player round robin), one game a day, with three rest days. The last round is on the 31st.
Our chap is on the right, here.
Just underneath the elite event is the Challengers, which is the same format and has a combination of exciting young players and others hoping to qualify for next year's main event, as the winner will book a seat there in 2017. Where the top players tend to play in suits (sponsorship demands a certain image), if you aren't fettered by such requirements, chess has no dress code. Take Dutch sixteen year old International Master, Jorden van Foreest:
He'd fit right in at the Broadway.
In that 2nd photo, are the two of them having a staredown, or is that just for the cameras?
Interesting you say this.....
"....Where the top players tend to play in suits (sponsorship demands a certain image),...."
I find it extremely odd that sponsored poker players seem to have no requirement to present themselves in clean & smart attire, preferably with corporate branding. So many don't, & it puzzles me greatly. Pretty sure many sites just spew money on sponsorship, though with money tightening in poker, that's changing now. I do like to see a site Pro well-attired.

Yes, church halls, village halls, hotels, schools and leisure centres mainly for tournaments. You need enough room for the participants, spectators, analysis rooms, preferably somewhere for lunch and so on.

They were probably just talking to each other before the game or the photographer happened to snap a glance. Very few players do all the Kasparov mind games and, frankly, you have to be a certain level to be able to carry that kind of thing off.
As for the dress code, you're sitting down in the same seat for four hours or more, so being comfortable is important. Sometimes, the host sponsor has an idea and everyone gets something to wear, like in Nanjing in 2009:
Thank you for the nod. A fun weekend for sure. Would have been nice to have won the dozen or so more flips needed to win first prize but no complaints with a result at Old Trafford for once.

No ski masks, then?
Did you get to meet, or chat to, Mr Ski Mask? Was he, you know, "normal"?
It sort of range-merged with your comment......

Didn't have the pleasure. Had he been at my table, I would have demanded they turned the heating up.

Aaaah... at long last cycling is back on the menu. The Tour Down Under starts tomorrow, and although there isn't much value to be had (Simon Gerrans to win outright @ 7/2 and Caleb Ewan to win Stage 1 @ Evens are about right price-wise), there is one banzai bet that I'm pretty sweet on.
Tsgabu Grmay
is a young Ethiopian who rides for Lampre-Merida. He came 11th overall in last year's edition of the race, and has been training at altitude back home over our Winter. On paper, he'll be riding for team leaders Diego Ulissi and Louis Meintjies, but I'm thinking Lampre might be holding something back. I'm not yet sold on a drug-free Ulissi, and Meintjies seems to have had a relaxed Winter (possibly holding back for the Tour de France which he is aiming for). Meintjies has also said in an interview that Grmay is in top nick, and that the TDU is a big goal for the youngster (he might not get another chance to shine what with Ulissi, Meintjies and Costa sharing the captaincy). Curiously, Grmay has also been absent from all of Lampre's training/promo videos and pics. Are they keeping their dark horse under wraps?
300/1 at BetUnfair SportsBok is a big enough price for me to flick in a small each-way bet. I suggest £5 e/w for Fred.

yesterday's losses
-£10 Lindsay Vonn in the ski-ing
-£15 Steffon Armitage in the RU, where Tulon snatched a victory against Wasps with a try in the last moments if the game
ongoing
Wayne Rooney scored for the fourth game a row, making it six league goals for the season. Fickering embers of hope for the golden boot if he continues his form, but bad news for the (bigger) Martial top Man U goalscorer bet, Anthony being stuck out on the right winger from where he may not drift
Arsenal's point, in a game in which both goalkeeeprs starred, took them back joint top* of the PL, a point ahead of Man C
these are Caley's projections for the end of the season, which we would take
Swansea against Watford tonight, we are looking for Watford points
in the NFL
a corker
a corked one
meaning next week there are 3 36yo+ quarterbacks in the conference round...
early odds
New England Patriots -3 @ Denver Broncos
Arizona Cardinals @ Carolina Panthers -3
liked these images from Leopardstown yesterday. Ruby on K.Vic. 999-1 in running, on the floor and got up to win

Rich - did you see my Post about Curtis, at Swansea?
Did BetFred settle early, as Corals & BMU did?

Betfred isn't settled, the other two did
Curtis's tenth game is two games away i think
he is interim manager, new man is head coach, curtis picks the team, so i think we are ok
(unless someone has a different interpretation?)
