What a great photo that is, Simon, it all looks rather exciting.

Guess at the lower - or less exalted levels - it's not quite so grand, so regimented. What sort of venues would Club players use - Church Halls, Hotel Conference suites, that sort of thing?

PS - I just read you had a deep run at Old Trafford - congrats - & almost as wonderfully, were acquainted again with the Bromley's. (Is that apostrophe correct, it feels wrong somehow?) I would imagine you get on very well indeed with them both.

I have realised this morning I haven't said when this chess bet is due to finish. The tournament is 13 rounds (14 player round robin), one game a day, with three rest days. The last round is on the 31st.

Just underneath the elite event is the Challengers, which is the same format and has a combination of exciting young players and others hoping to qualify for next year's main event, as the winner will book a seat there in 2017. Where the top players tend to play in suits (sponsorship demands a certain image), if you aren't fettered by such requirements, chess has no dress code. Take Dutch sixteen year old International Master, Jorden van Foreest:

In that 2nd photo, are the two of them having a staredown, or is that just for the cameras?

I find it extremely odd that sponsored poker players seem to have no requirement to present themselves in clean & smart attire, preferably with corporate branding. So many don't, & it puzzles me greatly. Pretty sure many sites just spew money on sponsorship, though with money tightening in poker, that's changing now. I do like to see a site Pro well-attired.

Yes, church halls, village halls, hotels, schools and leisure centres mainly for tournaments. You need enough room for the participants, spectators, analysis rooms, preferably somewhere for lunch and so on.

They were probably just talking to each other before the game or the photographer happened to snap a glance. Very few players do all the Kasparov mind games and, frankly, you have to be a certain level to be able to carry that kind of thing off.

As for the dress code, you're sitting down in the same seat for four hours or more, so being comfortable is important. Sometimes, the host sponsor has an idea and everyone gets something to wear, like in Nanjing in 2009:

Aaaah... at long last cycling is back on the menu. The Tour Down Under starts tomorrow, and although there isn't much value to be had (Simon Gerrans to win outright @ 7/2 and Caleb Ewan to win Stage 1 @ Evens are about right price-wise), there is one banzai bet that I'm pretty sweet on.

Tsgabu Grmay is a young Ethiopian who rides for Lampre-Merida. He came 11th overall in last year's edition of the race, and has been training at altitude back home over our Winter. On paper, he'll be riding for team leaders Diego Ulissi and Louis Meintjies, but I'm thinking Lampre might be holding something back. I'm not yet sold on a drug-free Ulissi, and Meintjies seems to have had a relaxed Winter (possibly holding back for the Tour de France which he is aiming for). Meintjies has also said in an interview that Grmay is in top nick, and that the TDU is a big goal for the youngster (he might not get another chance to shine what with Ulissi, Meintjies and Costa sharing the captaincy). Curiously, Grmay has also been absent from all of Lampre's training/promo videos and pics. Are they keeping their dark horse under wraps?
