Jaxie have a Samsung UE46ES7000 DLNA TV.

By right-clicking on (for instance) an avi video file in an explorer window on the lappie and clicking 'Play to', we can stream video to the telly using Windows Media Player as a server (apparently). This is a good thing. But, we want more!

We'd like to be able to stream the PC's live desktop and in particular video streams embedded in browsers (as opposed to already downloaded files). It seems that such a thing may be possible. There are a couple of programs called VLC (a media player/server) and TVersity which, when used in tandem appear to be able to achieve what we're after. However, reading various forums etc. it all seems a bit 'flaky' and there's no clear, step-by-step method that I can find.

I wondered if anyone was doing this successfully already using the above or some other method and might be able to offer advice and insights to help us avoid some of the pitfalls. Otherwise it seems I'll be hitting the forums and doing a lot of hair-pulling-out.

We're using Windows 7 Home Premium.

I use VLC Media Player all the time for playback.  Not for streaming though as I don't have a posh telly.

It's excellent, and free!

Can't say I do this myself, but I googled "DLNA live desktop streaming" and first link is http://alenblog.wordpress.com/2011/04/21/stream-computer-desktop-to-tv-using-dlna-tversity-and-vlc/ which looks reasonably useful, and has further inks.

Cheers Rex.  We tried that one earlier in the week and I think it drove Jack simple with all it's double dutch.  I've given up the fight.  HDMI cable for live streams will do me fine.  He, on the other hand, is a man on a mission.

I managed to get it working but needed a new pc to do it. My 4½ y-o lappie had no chance. I reckon anything bought in the last year should at least have half a chance. If anyone fancies giving it a go, I'll happily give you a few pointers.

Nothing in particular really. Bit of sport, light entertainment, drama series - just the usual. We recently cancelled Sky totally, hence the sudden interest in streaming video to the tv.

It's now somewhat moot as Sky have given us the full package free for 4 months Smiley but without the HD channels Sad
