Probably a simple spot but I tend to be unsure when it comes to hands like these. The villain is playing 48/10 with a 3-bet of 10% over 21 hands.

if we are 3betting it is because we assume he willshove a range we dominate and thus we are inducing. we wouldnt choose 99 as a hand to 3bet and fold, thus a bluff because the reasons for bluffing is to make people fold better hands, and nobody will fold a hand better than 99, whilst even if we did want them to fold some better hand we would choose a hand such as AT or something that would have blockers, thus combos wise decreasing the chance of our opponents having a hand that they want to continue with.

Arguments for shoving rather than 3betting a hand such as a middle pocket pair would be to protect the ICM value of our chips and not want our opponent to shove hands on us because of our financial postion in the tournament.

There are spots where you would perhaps 3bet fold this hand, if the opener had 18 big blinds, we were in position and with 40 big blinds, we could 3bet with the intention of stacking off but folding to a deeper stack if they cold 4bet us such as a 38bb stack where our equity vs their range will not be sufficient enough to wager the rest.

3betting and folding here would be a catastrophic error and show huge, huge fundamental flaws. In a cash game this would be alarming, but in a tournament it would literally be unforgivable as if you are playing a lot of tournaments, especially on a stake and you dont realise huge theoretical errors such as this with less than 20bbs then you will literally be losing money every time you press the register button for an MTT and especially a SNG.

Pleno, i think you have misread the hand. Nice post though.

Its just an open followed by a 18bb shove - doubt i would fold

no, he enters the pot for 100, we make it 300 and he shoves.

Dealt to sharplea [ ]

drtydingo calls 100

sharplea raises to 275

drtydingo raises to 1,772, and is all in

In terms of reasons for calling

1- When he shoves smaller pocket pairs we are in fantastic shape
2- Even if we are behind his range marginally, with the price we are given we should call
3- He is a fish so can just randomly have Ax hands that we do fantastically against.

Yeah don't fold and make a note presume you called and he showed you TT+.

I would iso a little bigger (something like 325) just for straight up value, as the most likely outcome is villian limp/calls in this spot, in small buyin donkaments.

Bad weak players limp shoving from early position have a range of AK, AA, KK, QQ 90% of the time, don't they?  I mean every so often you see someone go nuts with 34 off, but that just sticks in your mind and it is really rare.

I don't see how folding now can be catastrophic, or hugely flawed.  I don't think it is simple at all, and I normally station with 99 more than most.

I think this is an easy call in a low stakes tournament.

Pleno - he limped UTG+1, I iso'd in position, he shoved over the top. Would never 3-bet fold here for 18bbs effective.

Call. Some people only do this with AA/KK and some people spaz out and do it with anything. I call and make a note if he has TT+ as someone else said.

This is, quite clearly, what I should have done.

This was my thinking at the time, so I just folded. Next time I call.

3bet jam all day long. 99 is too strong to fold but it is damn tricky to play with a flat call.
