Have done experiments in Holland where they take all the road markings, signs and lights away and it reduced accidents by like a third.

Turns out making it really obvious that if you drive like a dick then you'll crash forces people not to be a dick.

They did a similar experiment in London, and like you say it forces people to think, make eye-contact and a bit of common sense.

Unfortunately, I don't think Boris Johnson was run-over during the experiment - so it was probably a failure.
