Excellent in The Thick Of It, but I find him painful as a stand-up.

Was ok on Mock The Week but his Good News show was pretty poor imo. Whenever he said something that was supposed to be funny he just got a bit shouty and waved his arms a bit.

Agree about the show, but his stand up live is pretty deece.

so many views and opinions here that you might start to believe that people actually have different tastes Smiley

I saw Alan Carr in the comedy tent at Leeds Festival over ten years ago and he was hilarious, maybe i caught him on a good day. I certainly caught him at the optimum point in his career for my tastes and it's unlikely that i would buy tickets to see him now.

I've seen Phil Jupitus twice at the Fringe. The first was his return to stand up and was top class stuff. Carefully crafted and really well delivered. The next year, hmmm, not so much
Had i seen the second gig first i wouldn't have seen him twice, but now i'd book again.

maybe we need a thread along the lines of
"If you like X then you are likely to appreciate Y"

Pretty much everyone mentioned so far (I like Al Murray and Rich Hall, but everyone else nah).

IMO there are simply not many good British comedians right now. They all tow a very safe line, because stand up has become big business now (ie. get on Live at the Apollo, get on a panel show, then bring out a Christmas DVD, rinse, repeat).

Saddens me to say, but I look to the yanks for 99% of my comedy now.
