But now a rant.

You might have noticed I rarely have a good word for bookmakers.

But the men who hold the satchels are like aid workers in Syria compared to the pawnbrokers/pay day loan shops/exchange bureaus like Ramsdens and the Money Shop.

I tried to change €2000 into sterling today and they wanted £140 for the privilege.

A woman was changing £2000 into Euros before me and they made £80 from her.

I did (obv) try to cut out the middle man scumbag and offered her 1c over spot to change direct with me.

But she clearly didn't like the cut of my gib and turned me down.

So Ramsdens would have made £220 in 3 minutes for swapping her money for my money had I not declined their offer.

I don't begrudge them 2% or so for their service. But nearly 9% is highway robbery.

They are complete and utter scum.

Will try my friendly local casino tonight.

Seems a tad harsh, Keith.

They are selling a convenience product in a competitive marketplace.

No different to a loaf of bread in Tesco, where we happily pay them their profit margin of whatever it is. And if we don't like Tesco'a price, we can trundle along to Sainsbury. Which is cheaper, but less convenient.

I suppose it feels different because it is money, but it's not really.

If you ran a business, would you feel entitled to charge what the market would stand, & in doing so, maybe earn yourself a few bob to pay your overheads, costs, & a bit of profit?

9% though?

I remember Joe Beevers worked out if you took £1000 into Barclays on the 1st of June and changed it into dollars and then changed back to sterling on the 2nd. And repeated this every day for the month, you'd have no money left by June 30th.

For £100 I can understand charging a little higher than my 2% benchmark, to cover exes and admin.

But neither would consider a reduction for a bulk sale.

At Tescos if you bought 1000 loaves of bread, you'd expect a discount, no?

Well I guess they have chosen a "flat %" model, they could just as easily charge 20% for tiddly amounts, & 2% for large amounts, yes.

As it turned out, you exercised your right to go elsewhere - but it has cost you in terms of inconvenience, time, &, most unlike you, got you into rant-mode, which has probably chopped 5 minutes of your lifespan due to the stress.

Every time we have a rant, we lose 5 minutes, you know.

I gain about a week.

If nothing got me riled, I would fade into an apathetic stupor and be dead within the month.

This song is especially apt if you happen to support Queens Park Rangers

I love reading Camels anti free-market rants. FX in particular is extremely competitive and consumers have a choice. Glad you're using your options and being savvy!

well played in Dublin Keith. Pleasure to play with you for a bit at the end of day one.

Stupid Question. If you stood outside one of these currency places for a few hours with a pocket full of cash and tried to poach everyone walking in by offerining to do it at spot or 1% could they call the police? Are you committing a crime? If so what is it?

Such a dog to get anyone walk by that understood what they were doing, they'd push past you and pay the spread instead, without realising that that was what they had done.

Ahh, now I can put a face to a name on here.

Good to play with you too Bergeroo. Congrats on the deep run.

Was a fun tournament, wasn't it?

Pretty much this.

Suspect anyone you offer money to will assume you are trying to rip them off in some way.
