This might seem a silly question Trevor but I wonder what you think your biggest aid was on your way to back-to-back final tables in huge and difficult fields??
Morning John
Good question which i will answer honestly and take the criticism on the chin
Both day 1s was keep your snout clean and make day 2 in both cases i had a bullet in reserve but i wanted to try and preserve those bullets as well for future comps (tight bastard)
In 2014 days 2 and 3 were very up and down but my hands held when they needed too, i went to the final table Short stack as usual but managed to ladder whilst the remainder went crazy amongst themselves and i got stuck in when holding anything of any significance, just kept low profile really.
2015 days 2 and 3 totally different
Never hardly had average chips over the whole 2 days so i set my stall out to play ultra tight and try to make the min cash 151st
Ultra tight meant folding pre A7 at least 20 times and only in one instance would that hand of won which i saw
Constantly folding 10j, jq, jk, mid suited connectors, A8 and below, all those marginals were hitting the muck pre unless i was on the blind and could take a look cheaply.
Discipline was the key, stick to the above formula without second thinking, it takes some doing but it was working
I made the money so anything else was a bonus now so why not stick to the same plan its worked okay so far
was constantly running between 5 and 20 big blinds but kept folding those A7 etc and in the majority of cases i would of been
"tits up" if i played them
When we went back for day 3 had 435k which was workable the thoughts were "don't panic Captain Mannering"
Stick to the original ultra tight formula
Its bloody tough when your sat on the BB and folding with only 5-6 BBs
Managed to keep out of trouble and survived to hit the final table with 8 Bigs, 675K, Average 2.5 mill, blinds 80-40-10
Plan same as before keep dumping the marginals and wait for the right opening, discipline, dont panic
Wormed my way up to third in the usual fashion
A deal was mentioned and we were asked to see if we wanted to see what the payouts would of been based on chips, i declined,
Chippy had 13, Richard had 7 me 5, lets play i will chance my luck
Heads up i was lucky not to go out even earlier had 89 v 8j with two
on the board, which lost me a considerable amount of my stack, that takes some getting out of that
Felt i had to push my AJ against a re-raise turns out i was wrong but thankfully along the line i had made a lot of right decisions
I got a tremendous amount of support from people at DTD which was humbling and very much appreciated
I congratulate the winner who played a very good game
I hope that explains my strategy John, i know its not every bodies cup of tea
