I used to do these puzzles a lot when I was younger.  I think it must have been about 30 years ago.  I think they started in the telegraph, but we used to get magazines or books with them in.  I have been trying to remember for a few hours what they used to be called.  

I'd be surprised if I couldn't still do them now.  I am sure I could still do them.  It is just a question of working out the strategy then you are off.

edit

google is my friend. They were called nonograms and it was the sunday telegraph that had them. 

another edit.  stay away from wikipedia if you want to solve it yourself.
