I've never seen it in professional play and I've only seen it once, (and that was v me) in an amateur money match.

I played hundreds of amateur money-matches during my years in Canada but never had a referee for any of them that I can recall, that was before the "miss" rule came into the game though.

What we used to do was play "cue-ball fouls only" to avoid any arguments.

It might have been Peter Ebdon who lost a game for misses before.

This is the one I was thinking of.  Normally these seats when I think something was a couple of years ago, it turns out to be 10, but this was 2013.

Very rare they actually play the same shot the 3rd time.  Seen it happen loads getting down to the 3rd shot after two misses.  They usually play a less secure/defensive 3rd safety to ensure they don't concede the frame.  Seemed an incredible bad risk/reward decision by Murphy to take the shot on for a 3rd and final time given how early in the frame it was and how many other options he could have used.

Its actually happened a few times.  In the studio right after, Davis said he had done it and Ken Doherty admitted to it as well.

O'Sullivan V Selby.

Selby makes a 70 break, O'Sullivan then pots a long one and goes on to make an incredible total clearance to snatch frame and match.

I can't remember the last time I saw someone make a 70 and lose the frame.

I don't like Ronnie but credit where it's due.

Did you see Selby's face when Ronnie started that clearance? He was in Nightmare City, wincing after every shot, he seemed to know that his missed cannon to break the pack was going to cost him.

Great theatre.

There is a You Tube clip of that frame on Fred this morning.

With guys like Ronnie, like them or not, I'm always reminded of the sporting greats, Piggott, McCoy, Ali, Daley Thomspon, Stanley Matthews, Choc Thornton & so many more, & with hindsight, I wish I'd watched & admired more often when I had the chance. I can barely believe that Ronnie is in the twilight of his career, I really regret not watching more of him.  We - well definitely I - will never see the like again.

And as with so many, we have to prefix "genius" with "wayward" - Alex Higgins, George Best, & a good few others I suppose.

Ain't sport great?

I spent all of yesterday up in SB&G's Head Office, surrounded by TVs showing sport, & young energetic traders doing their thing. The buzz was wonderful.

Here you are Tom, to save you delving into the murky depths of Fred.

The break starts at 9.40.

there was an interesting indecent in the preceding frame. Selby had reached the point where O'Sullivan needed 3 snookers when he attempted to roll a red in. The red stopped on the lip of the pocket and Selby stamped his foot in a joke 'shake the table to make it drop' move.

Of course stamping on the floor had no effect and the red didn't drop but if it had, (because as is often the cases it was still moving and would have dropped anyway) the ref would have had no option but to replace it and call a foul.

If you re-watch it, both players and the ref froze for a couple of seconds as they realised the potential consequences.
