"Poker is not a spectator game"

I was playing a tournament in Belgium this week. The biggest tournament in this casino all year and of course people were interested in what was going on, railing friends etc - but this casino was not a fun place!
Approaching the bubble the TD made the announcement in English and French for all people who weren't playing to leave the room. He was questioned why and gave the reason (rather dismissively to the rail) because "poker is not a spectator game" - he announced it a few times before changing it to "not a spectator sport"
Do you agree?
I would say that poker is something that is watched better online/on TV than live - of course then you can see the cards and it makes it so much more interesting. For me to rail a live poker game is pretty deathly boring even for more than a few minutes, even if someone I know well is playing.
There are very few sports where I say watching on TV is probably better than in the flesh. I'd argue UFC/MMA is one. Firstly because the cage the fighters compete in obscured the view and secondly because a lot of the action often involved intricate Jiu Jitsu moves and fighters pressed up against the side of the cage which is hard to see. Motor Racing (if you like that kind of thing) is possibly another one, as you can only see a fraction of the action from your spot.
What does everyone think about this statement from the Belgian Tournament Director?

Most people can't even manage to watch the hands at their *own* table play out, never mind one full of randoms!

hmm i think the atmosphere for a tournament is a lot better with people around, getting rid of railers just because of a veiw he has about poker seems a little miserable. There's a reasonable chance there wasn't a great deal of room and was concerned about some collusive or cheating behaviour and juat didn't wanna say that so used his spectator line.
without seeing the cards its pretty boring unless you're actively interested in one/a few of the players specifically.

In no way surprised by his attitude.
Belgium is not a fun place!
Never go anywhere with Stan in it, except Hunstanton, or Belgium.
